We booked in for next wed to get our first 10,000km service.
    The guys there quoted:
$150 for the 10k service and $49 for the Emissions service (apparently
they recommend that for the prius)

My question is, I've never heard of this "Emissions service" before.. what is it and is it required??

To me I'm getting the feeling they're trying to sell us 50 bucks worth of "snake oil" because it's a "new technology" car.. and we may not know enough about it... :-P

Of course they recommend it. It's $49 pure profit. As an aside, the 10k service is an oil change, so I wouldn'y pay the $150 either. (Feel free to look in your 'passport to service' booklet that came with the car, you'll see).

    Thanks,
    Shawn

It would be interesting to know just what an emissions service is. Perhaps you could call the dealer, get an explanation, and let us know.

Unless the Prius is very different "down under", sounds like a complete ripoff to me.

go in and ask for a tire rotation and oil change. don't even say the words "10K service"

emissions service??? uh. unless they're doing a state-required testing i don't think you need it. remember the prius is very low emissions. maybe that's needed for a big suv or something but not our cars!

most dealers come up with their own profitmakers on top of warranty-required service. go in and tell them just what you want done and no more. you'll save plenty of money.

Yowch, they're off to make some serious profit from you - I'd be asking for an itemized list of exactly what they're planning on doing and what the charges for each process are...

I got a service done at 14,000km and it cost me $30cdn for an oilchange, and $15cdn for a tire rotation.

    That was it.

Infact, my car has about 25,000km on it now (year and a half old), and I've spent a grand total of about $120cdn on maintenance, and I'm exactly following the Toyota dealership's recommended maintenance schedule and logging every receipt. Remember, a lot of the stuff on the maintenance schedule is supposed to be "checked", but doesn't necessarily need to be "replaced" if it's still in good condition.

I would think emissions service is an induction cleaning and the like. Then again, with what dealers charge, $49 would be too cheap for that.

    I do not know then.

My 2000 GMC Sierra had problems with intake deposits in the throttle body, specifically the Idle Air Control pintle valve. The Vortec 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 V8 motors will have rapid deposit accumulation if driven in very low temperatures (0 F or -18 C and colder) and city driving cycle.

It was fairly easy to clean the TB and IAC if you had the shop manual. The hardest part was getting the intake duct off, the boot will stick to the aluminum TB. A dab of silicone dielectric grease usually fixed that.

You would also disconnect the connector to the IAC and take off the two allen head screws that held it to the TB. Using an "approved" TB cleaner - such as that stuff from 3M, carefully spray the deposits off the IAC pintle valve, and liberally spray the passages in the TB. Use compressed air to spray dry.

You would then have to go through the "idle learn" procedure: Restart with all accessories and lights off, 5 mins in Drive with foot on brake, 5 mins in Park, shut off. Wait 30 secs and restart to register correct idle speed.

I had to do this every Spring or put up with a low rough idle and sometimes a hard hot start. Piece of GMC crap!

Looking at the Prius TB and IAC, I really don't see the need for frequent TB cleaning. I rather doubt the conditions that will really cause rapid TB deposit formation - extreme cold -18 C or colder and city driving cycle - even exist in Australia

Yep. We're in the wrong line of work:

"Sorry mate you need an Emissions Service!"

[walks back to Prius, gives 5 second spray from can of TB cleaner, takes 30 min sandwich break, presents shocking bill to customer]
