    Hey all. Need opinions. I have a 2010 Prius with just over 98,000 miles. Yesterday ( below 20 degrees outside ) I went to leave to go to town and when I started the prius it rattled and the engine ran very rough. It was obviously missing bad! I popped the hood and observed the engine rocking while it was missing. Within 30-45 seconds the engine smoothed out and it ran great again. Check engine light tripped. I was afraid to drive it to town so I called the dealer and scheduled a check for today. It was due an oil change so I included that.
    Got up today and car started fine ( below 30 degrees out ) I drove it to Toyota. Once I got there I explained to them what it did yesterday and that it had ran fine since. I told them I wanted a oil and filter change with 0W20 Synthetic Oil only. They said that was no problem. I also told them to go ahead and do the 100,000 mile scheduled service. That included the oil change, multi point inspection, inspecting brakes, topping off fluids, ( Reportedly Tire Rotation ), and engine coolant replacement. ( The owners manual says the inverter coolant fluid should be changed as well but they didn't include that?? Was not on their list )
    Anyway here is what happened. They did a vehicle diagnostic ( Computer Check ) and said everything checked out and was doing fine. Check engine showed codes P0300, P0301, P0303. They said because it was no longer missing and because the diagnostic vehicle check showed everything was operating fine they just cleared the codes and said to bring it back if it ever happened again.
    Documents shows oil and filter change and shows supplies as 4.7 (1.0 QT ) 0W/20 Full Syn.
    Multi Point inspection sheet shows everything was good but the tire rotation part isn't checked off and I really have no idea if they did it or not.
    Documents show replace on engine coolant and says ( super long life coolant )
    I checked the oil and it is so clean you about can't see it on the stick without holding it at an angle. The coolant in the reservoir looks bright and I assume new. And to be honest the inverter coolant looks bright as well but to be honest I have no idea what either looked like before hand.

    QUESTIONS:
    1. Even though the documents state they used 0w/20 full syn. the sticker in the window says the next service is due in 5000 miles, and I assume the cars automatic reminder is set at 5000. The sticker does not show what oil was used, only next service date. I asked the advisor and they said the next scheduled service was 105,000 which I confirmed in the owners manual but I assumed the oil change sticker would show 10,000 miles not 5000 since it was 0W/20 Syn. ??
    2. Second what do you all think about the answer to the check engine light issue??? I guess if the diagnostic doesn't show exactly whats wrong they can't fix it??
    3. I assume the other items were done. Fluids look new and clean and I have no reason to doubt they did what they stated.

    In the states the scheduled inverter coolant change IS later. Read the fine print in the warrant/maintenance booklet.

    Also, there may be a sticker on side of inverter coolant reservoir, that confirms a later mileage variable. Our Canadian 2010 has this sticker, I believe it says 160K miles??

    Someone should be along to look up those codes.

    There's a service every 5K, for one thing or another, not necessarily oil changes. Look up in aforementioned booklet.

    Your auto service manager will eat well this week, my friend. And next week, too.

    Clearing the codes are ok, in my opinion. The misfire may be caused by water in the cylinders or fuel system due to the cold weather. If the codes don't return, and you don't experience missing or knocking in the future, I wouldn't worry too much.

    It's a bit of a crap shoot on the type of oil the dealer supplied -- without a test you cannot tell the composition or weight. Yeah, you asked for a specific type/weight. But the dealer may value the margin over keeping a promise. Also, there is no way to check and see if the oil filter was changed. These two issues on the oil change are why I do my own in less time than it takes to drive to any shop in my town.

    Googling the codes, they indicate cylinder misfire.

    To jump from a 5000 service interval sticker, to they've used the wrong oil, is illogical, as Spock would say. They said they used 0W20, take them at their word. Every 5K there's something, if only just a tire rotation.

    The transaxle fluid needs changing, the container in the engine bay is the inverter coolant fluid, different beasts, time for new brake fluid.
    If it was a Toyota dealer they used the correct fluid.
    Call and ask how much to change the engine fluid, that was most of your bill.

    Yeah, they did some diagnostics, and oil and filter change, and an engine coolant change (which requires cracking 2 gallon bottles of the Toyota Coolant): $229 all in is not unreasonable.

    What's worrisome is the misfire codes. And wait-and-see is probably as good a course as any. Try to avoid running the engine just for a few seconds when cold, instead let it run long enough to shut itself down. That is one apparent trigger for shaking at subsequent start-up.

    Like others have said and given background on, the codes are linked to cylinder misfires;).

    This is a cold start issue, and one you will continue to experience :(.

    One way to eliminate this is to install an oil catch can. Here is a thread about it:

    While a long read, there is useful information :).

    Seems like you are not the DIY type, but the install does not take much skill, just time and effort;). I’m sure some shop could do it for a small fee.

    Yes the engine coolant was the majority of the bill. $176 for the 100,000 service including oil change and engine coolant. $52 for the engine diagnostic on check engine. You all make me feel better about the whole dealership thing. I worry about them not doing what they say but I'm sure they did.

    T-SB-0010-12 and others were written to address the knocking on cold start up...much discussed here.

    I assume since 2 of the 4 cylinders were missing is what caused it to be so severe. I will look into the oil catch can. I will also make sure to let it run till it cuts off during cold weather before trying to drive. Thank you all

    When I need to move our (stone-cold) car a few feet, I do it in 10 second spurts, as many as needed, to avoid a start up.

    You have somewhere between 12~15 seconds grace after making the car "ready", before the engine starts. I've found you've got basically no chance of EV Mode, with a cold-soaked engine, so I just go straight to the 10 second spurts.

    I just wish Toyota had made it 60 seconds.

    Never got a new manifold for either of mine because they never threw a code...but it didn't fix things anyway. Learned from another member years ago that depressing the accelerator as I'm releasing the start button helps. I think there is an EGR T-SB related to your codes. I'm sure someone will correct or confirm this though. Haven't messed with a catch can personally and probably won't with both my 2010 or 2015...but that's me.

    If you've had the intake manifold in your hands you get an idea what's going on. The EGR passages can get royally clogged, and the PCV without an oil catch can leaves you with a permanent "swimming pool" directly below the throttle body.

    Realize you're addressing Engine823, but my experience with TDIs made me very knowledgeable about these two systems and there "problems". My solutions there were less that "legal" though.

    An easy way to know it they done tire rotation is mark either the front 2 or back 2 tires. I typically write FL and FR with a big sharpie on the designated location of each front tires.

    Also take a lot of photos of exterior of the car before taking it in for service. You have to prove that they dinged the car, if that situation ever comes up.

    If your beyond crazy, dash cam it and tell them not to touch the device or power source unless you authorized them to do that.

    I'm paranoid about dealerships and quick oil change places not doing things correctly. Check with you local Prius meetup to get help. They've got the brains of car mechanics and the hearts of teachers.

    Dealerships won't let you in their shops anymore because of liability. It would be nice to be able to watch them.
    I have always done my own maintenance except warranty work but some day I may have to end up trusting them.
    Quick change oil places are the worst. I don't use them very often and when I do they usually disappoint me.
    I had one oil change done on my 2008 Prius and told them just change the oil. You don't talk to the guy who is actually doing the work so they yank your air filter out and doing all the other stuff they do. I asked to have the oil changed only, they don't communicate and don't get it.
