What A Van Did

    image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg It was not avoidable, and the Van vehicle never stopped, as it was running a red light fully established, and the contact was prolonged. Inside the car was the two side curtain and seat back image.jpeg airbags deployed on the collision (passenger) side. There was no passenger. And inside the car? Nothing. Couldn't tell it was crashed. The doors couldn't open on that side but the seats were still movable. Speed of the van was about thirty to thirty five. Then it was about twenty while it revved and pushed the Prius C about a hundred to two hundred feet, and maybe a little faster when the van turned to spin the Prius C out of its way, bending the wheel of the Prius C. And off the van went. Leaving the Prius C to sit, disabled, facing the right direction for the lane it landed in, opposite the initial direction of the van.

    Yikes, I hope you and anyone else in the car are okay, as that's the most important thing. It's incidents like this that are making me strongly consider putting dashcams in my vehicles.

    I have a concussion and there were bruises. A concussion makes sense because of all the violent motion the car was put through, but the bruises were mystifying. The seats are fabric and foam. Bruises. Huge bruises from areas of the seats, both back and the side. The seat belt worked great, and the seat held me. Where the seat belts were the bruises were slight. Where the seat cushions were they were large and dark as if to show me the strength of the impact.

    A dash cam would certainly replay the seconds leading up to it. I had a choice between three collisions, and took the one that was coming. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know. Two cars side by side would have hit me plus the van would have hit me if I went one way, and another way I would have hit a stationary vehicle, possibly pushing him into the van. The car, like a small truck that I did not hit turned into the witness and helped me at my car. It was all so tight and it was all seconds.

    Thanks. The police took the plate that fell off at the scene which may lead to the driver. Meanwhile I have to take it easy to recover and not think of too much. But the total came as a surprise to me. It was determined in the second inspection and by the looks of it I have the impression that it is because of the chassis. I'm thinking that the van, had he stopped, would have caused damage to the doors and nothing more.

    That's good news that you were not seriously hurt.

    Hit and run drivers are the worst, hope they catch the prick.

    Will you be buying another Prius with the insurance payout?

    The blessed Prius was leased. I am looking around but probably will have to wait on practical terms for the situations both medical and financial to stabilize. I live in an area with a lot of public transportation. Unfortunately one of my jobs is pretty far away. I have a question about feature differences for replacement between the model years in the builds 3 and 4. When did the smart key initiate? When did they put that five destination navigation system in? Do they all have that (mwaw!) crumple zone? Is the 2016 worth making the stretch?

    The construction of the car really impressed me. It is built like a tank. But I wish I had practiced extreme tactical maneuvers for a battle such as this. On the downside I wish there was a bigger kick on the accelerator or stronger cornering on the wheels.

    I love the C, not crazy about the split in the lift back, and couldn't deal with the mileage of a V. But I think I could consider either a C or a lift back.

    I wouldn't assume the insurance will deem it totalled. It's seriously damaged for sure, but my guess is no.

    i don't know anything about the c, but the lift back has had the smart key system since 2004.

    some packages are drivers door only, and some are passenger and hatch as well. they all work without an ignition key and fob in pocket.

    the 'gen4 has some great improvements (mpg's, handling, comfort, quiet) but you can get a great deal on '15's right now.
    i don't know anything about gps, other than it's pretty bad.

    Assuming you mean regarding being totalled: it just looks borderline. It may be, depending on residual value, what they discover. I just wouldn't count on it just yet.

    We took a similar hit with a previous vehicle, albeit more towards the front. Both doors and front fender replaced, one rim machines, final bill around 8~9 grand.

    It was very frustrating, the shop never did get the doors closing per original. The car's still in the family, still going.

    Here's how our's looked. Maybe slightly less severe:

    My wife was driving someone, someone turned left into her. She even went up onto the sidewalk, trying to dodge him, but he kept on coming, oblivious. She was pretty shook up.

    I agree that there were frustrating moments with the GPS. It can't seem to understand left turns sometimes. "Make a legal u-turn and your destination will be on the right" uh, left turn, thanks. It also never learned the word "this". I'm five feet from a corner, "make the next right". It chose when to give me notice. I'm in the left or right lane in traffic and in ten feet I am to make the opposite (right or left) turn. But where it excelled was in taking five destinations and going from one to the next without any prompting.

    I see that was a horrendous accident and am glad nobody was seriously hurt. The door hinges need to be reattached just right assuming no frame damage came about. Perhaps they did not replace the door frames? It is crazy the prices of repairs. If we bought parts ourselves it would cost so much less, said one body shop person a few months ago about a fog light cover. I had a raccoon incident, so sad. I felt there were revenges sought by raccoons everywhere ever since lol.

    I'm surprised how well the c held up. I just got a 2015 c three a few months back and wouldn't have expected it to fare this well.

    I know what you mean, Angels fan. I did not have time to think about what would happen to the car or to me, because it was inevitable. The moment of impact I thought, that's it? But wait! There's more! If he just had stopped the damage would have been surprisingly even less. That crumple zone. It does what it is supposed to do.

    I've seen more and more hit and runs. It seems nobody stops after a crash anymore. People suck.
    It drives home the need for uninsured motorist and gap insurance. If you get hit hard by a hit and run you could have a $100k in medical bills in the first 24 hours. It's a scary world out there.
    Encourage the adjuster to total the car. it will never be the same after a crash like that, and Carfax will show the collision, meaning diminished value of your car. Push for the total and get yourself a new one.
