Water leaks and pools in rear hatch trim

No. I've developed the art of opening the hatch suuuuuuuper slowly! Must be amusing to onlookers!

 

dirt in the channels causing water to pool and not run out, are you parking facing slightly down hill? are you sure its water?

Once I had the spoiler off, I used a hose to flush the drains.

 

I fixed my leak from the rear hatch trim when it rains. I took off the interior upper hatch trim panel and the rear washer nozzle was not secured to the hatch-I took it off and messed with the clips that hold it to the car, and put it back with it's rubber gasket and my leak is fixed. I might need a new washer nozzle and gasket in the future but for now it's not leaking after 2 days of heavy rain. The Prius interior paneling is so much easier to remove than my 1987 toyota van!

thanks bisco, I love forums and this one is great. I just checked the trunk/hatch again after last night's expected 1-3" rain and no leak! I definitely recommend checking your hatch washer nozzle for leaks if you have this problem.

 

Following up on Stroudley's post (several years later). I had the same problem the last few weeks where water would pool after a rain and dump when opening the rear door. After reading the above, I tried flossing and the problem persisted (that day with a large cup of water). I realized there is another area for water to pool. If you don't want to go the route of taking off the spoiler, I recommend flossing a few other places. See picture below.

I took a high gage (very thin) wire and flossed between #1 & #3 as Stroudley did on previous page but found that water will continue to pool behind the part labeled as #4.

In order to allow water to drain from that area, I put the piece of wire in the two holes labeled as #2 and flossed up to #3 (took a few attempts) and then just pushed the wire in hole #2 and ran it towards the passenger side of the car as far as it would go and then pushed in and out until satisfied that there were no clogs remaining there.
I then closed and poured a 32 oz cup of water down the hole shown at #3 above.

From the picture below, a bunch of crud (a heaping table spoon worth) came out of holes at #2 and #5 (more at #5). immediately after, I poured the 32 oz cup down the hole, it came out of all of the expected locations and when I opened the rear door, nothing came out of the side as before.


I hope this helps someone else.

 

Not to resurrect an old thread, but in case anyone needs it, the part number for the two plastic clips that hold the spoiler on in addition to the 5 nuts are part# 90467-10161 and are listed at $1.47 ea on Toyota's website.

Additionally, with the spoiler removed, I simply pulled out the plastic trim piece marked "4" (PN 75574-47010) in the first image of the previous post. It is attached to the glass with adhesive backed foam, and does not appear to serve a function. Will update if it turns out it does
