Had 10k service at 8820 miles on 02/06/13. They overfilled by 3/8 of an inch on the dipstick. Did own oil change at 10215 miles on 04/20/13. Found out the dealer never did the oil change. The oil filter I'd put in at 5k miles was still there. The oil color just as dark when I changed it at 5k with a touch of yellow color like they added non-synthetic.

I would give them a chance to respond to your findings...Listen, evaluate...I'm not defending them but base your plan-of-further-action, if necessary, after hearing their response....

One wonders in those 1st 25k services which are "free", if many dealers actually do the service....not a good sign Toyota!

yikes! i just had mine done at 8,000 miles and have no idea if they changed the filter, but, i think they changed the oil because they overfilled it by half an inch.

What kind of filter did you use? Obviously a non-OEM filter since you can clearly tell it's the same

It's unfortunate, but I haven't come across any service department that I can unequivocally trust 100%, so I do as much of the simple maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) myself.

Dealers should set up their service areas like they do for some car washes, where you can watch your car and the "service technicians" the entire time. While I understand that, for insurance purposes, I can't be IN the service area, at least let me observe what is being done to MY vehicle. One of the Toyota dealers in my area has the entire service area UNDERGROUND (out of sight, out of mind?)!!! They do offer free coffee and cable TV in the waiting area, though.

I recently got my Prius over there...
Their sales is really... o_O all they care was to sell the car and receive a good rating...
Now I'll have a 2nd thought to bring the car back for the "FREE" service... :cautious:

I am lucky my nephew has a garage so now I never take my cars to the stealer, not even for the recalls.

Dealerships are franchises. Some random person does all the hiring and makes all the calls. They just pay Toyota a fee to put up the logo. They have to follow standards and are inspected every so often, but like other franchises they do not all act the same.

So be wary of that one particular dealership, but it is not all dealerships.

I am also interested to know how you know they did not change the filter? I change my own oil on the Prius but for other vehicles I take a Sharpie and write the date I put it on there or the date it was changed at service. That way I know when it was put on there, but I also know when it wasn't taken off.

Sounds more like a lazy "Tech or Lube Boy" who did not do the oil change. I seriously doubt the dealership would want to harm their reputation over a oil change. Anyway, you should bring it up to the Service Manager. They will probably deny it but at least give you another oil change on the house to alleviate your concerns and put the lube boy on some kind of employee watch list.

Anyway, 99% of the dealership out there will have a bottom of the food chain lube boy do the oil change and tire rotation. The real techs will never do oil changes at a dealership.

That really stinks that so many businesses have no qualms about blatantly screwing people.

Same goes for the one in York, Pa I used to deal with. Typical highway "stealership".. Sell sell sell. I'm over the free service and at 30k wanted just an oil change. They said ok but when the appt came, the service manager says that they no longer do just oil changes, has to be a 10k-mile interval. So the car is in the bay and I say, screw it, it's here. So now my $29 oil change is a $59 service that I could've just done in my garage with a beer! Afterwards, another dealer said they could've done just the oil, no problem, for the $29!! I'll give it a try in a month.

I've always done my own oil because it's easy and I can chill in my garage and also check around the car, but I heard the Prius is a pain to do and it only costs $10 more to have others do it.
I agree the oil Techs are on the bottom of the totem pole and at this dealer, obviously don't give a crap. My only trust factor was that they did it in another bay where I could watch them. I trust nobody! After rotating the tires they put the hub caps back on wrong and covered all of the valve caps! Unreal

I wouldn't go to the stealers even if I had free oil changes for life.

Seems like many of them do more harm than good. Probably better off at a local trusted mechanic for simple things like an oil change if you're not doing it yourself.

You sir need to watch my Prius oil change video if you think it's hard. It's easy than you think, The only thing you need to invest in is the oil filter housing cap to remove the oil filter, which you can buy one at the dealership for 29$ I think.

If the service guy did replace the filter it would be on the parts bill. if there is no oil and or filter on the parts billing, then it wasn't done. They cant just take out random parts without a trail of costs. I don't think a service guy would keep the new filter and oil cans for himself and walk it out the door for himself.
