Warning lights after replacing rear wheel hub

    I failed to disconnect the 12V battery when replacing my right rear wheel hub and now I have several warning lights on the dash. I've read some other threads here about this but am still confused on what to do. I disconnected the 12V battery for a couple hours and reconnected it. No joy. We've driven it for a couple weeks. Lights are still on.

    What next steps can I take?

    I recommend beginning with the trouble codes so you know what the car is trying to tell you.

    Codes from the brake system (which these would be) can be read by connecting two pins and counting light blinks, if a code reading tool is not at hand. Details can be found in lots of threads here.

    Hoping someone can give a little more help to a complete newbie (the last car I worked on was my 1970 MGB if you get my drift). I have a BAFX OBDII diagnostic interface and the OBD Fusion app. If anyone here has used that app, could you tell me in a 1-2-3 way what I need to click to see the trouble codes? I was able to get my car identified to the app and it connects to the interface, but I'll be darned if I can figure out what to click to see the codes!

    Most likely the wheel speed sensor, connector or cable. You may need another app like Torque, Dr Prius or Car Scanner to read codes plus a phone connected by bluetooth.

    Trouble Codes
    Read Trouble Codes
    To read trouble codes, tap the Diagnostics icon on the main screen of the app. Codes can be refreshed by tapping the menu icon and 'Refresh'. Please note that you should only read codes with the key in the on position and the engine off. After querying the vehicle, any trouble codes detected will be displayed as shown below.

    Clear Trouble Codes
    To clear codes, tap the menu button and select the 'Clear Trouble Codes' option. Please note that you should only clear codes with the key in the on position and the engine off. Also, it is possible that a trouble code will not be cleared if the underlying problem that caused the code is not resolved. After clearing codes, you can re-read the codes by using the procedure outlined above.

    Thank you vvillovv. I followed your instructions and there are no trouble codes listed. (BTW, for a Prius, I don't think you can have the key in the On position and the engine off.) Given that, can anyone advise what my next steps should be?

    Probably two pushes of the start button with foot OFF the brake. Yeah, the push button start complicates things.

    Only because there's no "key". "KOEO" for a Prius means you have pressed the Power button two (2) times without the brake pedal pushed.

    Drive the car for a few minutes. Is the engine, brake or hybrid lights on? If you have trouble lights you will have codes even if you temporarily cleared them. Sometimes you have to go with the obvious which in this case is your sensor or wiring or connectors. Even if they are new. You might download another app if yours never shows codes when it should. I like Dr Prius and Car Scanner.

    The ABS, brake, and skid (?) lights remain on when car is turned on and driven. Pushed button two times with foot off gas. I see those lights but no trouble codes are shown. I guess my next steps are to (a) disconnect battery, jack the car back up, remove the tire, and remove/reinsert the sensor, and/or (b) get a different app and see if the trouble codes appear.

    My sense is that the root cause of the problem must be that the plug is not inserted correctly, was broken somehow when I did the work, or the after market wheel hub's sensor is defective. Does that sound right?

    Yes. The other apps are free as well.

    By the way, there are some strange wheel speed problems that may not be solved by a new sensor/cable assembly but are specifically diagnosed by codes.

    One handy thing about the brake system on a Gen 3 is that it will blink out its trouble codes on the dash lights for you if you jumper two pins at the diagnostic connector. That eliminates the whole question of does-app-X-work-better-than-app-Y from the what-are-my-trouble-codes question.

    The speed sensor is built-in to the bearing, not removable. My money would be on a loose connector. Mainly because it is SO difficutl to remove the connector. Poor design, and as often as not after a few pull-offs the retaining mechanism breaks, and then the connector is relying purely on friction.

    Thanks everyone. I got Car Scanner and here are the codes I'm seeing:
    C0210 RR Wheel Speed Sensor Signal
    C1241 Low battery positive voltage
    B2312 Power Window Switch malfunction (but windows work fine)
    U0155 Lost communication with instrument panel

    Lights I see include:
    Battery
    Tire pressure
    Malfunction indicator lamp
    ABS
    Brake (red word)
    Brake system warning light
    Electric power steering warning light
    Slip indicator

    Thoughts? Next steps?

    First thing to do is clear the codes, drive it and see what comes back.

    Thanks RJ. That cleared all of them except C0210. ABS, Brake and Slip lights still on when driven. (To remind you, I neglected to disconnect the battery when I replaced the wheel hub; however, after reading this thread, I did disconnect the negative and let it sit for a few hours.)

    Anything else to try before I unplug the sensor and plug it back in (after disconnecting the battery this time)?

    (The hub was made by MotorByMotor - not the biggest name brand in the universe - hope the sensor itself is not defective!)

    First, it's extremely doubtful that having the battery disconnected matters at all. See attached pdf pages 4 and 5 for ohmmeter checks that you can do, but I would FIRST make sure the connectors are in properly.

    If you elect to ohm things out be careful when probing to ensure you don't deform the pins. Don't focus on the exact reading, it will either be open (OL) or very low ohms (which is good).

    Air Boss, RJ - you were completely correct. I disconnected the battery, pulled the wheel, pulled the sensor, inspected it, shot a little compressed air into the plug, seated it back VERY firmly, and there are no lights on any more. Thank you so much. I saved several hundred dollars on this in no small part to all of you who continue to be willing to help newbies like myself.
