    I wouldn't buy/drive that if it was free.
    vw guys laugh at the Prius' body...but that is WAY worse.
    Plus the fact it's a vw

    No, I will say no to that...now and 2013+
    I also don't think it would be a very safe vehicle as it probably has no width to it since one person sits behind the other.

    At least with the Prius, it's a practicle car.

    By that time I may have the Type S. At "free" I can be persuaded to be a test pilot but I'm not s buyer. Even money bet it doesn't get sold in the USA.

    Wow. Many unusual features for a production passenger car. I admit others have had some of these features in the past but nothing recently.

    1) Diesel hybrid.
    2) Two CYL
    3) well under 1 Litre engne (Insight was .99l?)
    4) one seat wide (commuter cars has this but not production)
    5 ) true mpg over 100 using no outside power sources

    great comuter car and maybe even a 2 person longer trip ( beside the small cargo area )

    They do one of these concepts every year. Just like the hydrogen fuel cell, it's always five years away from production.

    Did you ever watch the movie "The Money Pit"? In it Tom Hank's character asks the contractor how long the job will take. The contractor replies "Two weeks." A month later when asked how long it will take to finish, the contractor says "Two weeks." Six months later: "Two weeks." It's always "two weeks".

    Crash testing becomes a real problem unless extensive work on energy absorbing structures are incorporated ... say a honeycomb laminate material. The problem is our old friend:
    F=ma
    In an impact, the lighter vehicle is going to suffer much greater acceleration and the occupants are going to be subject to much greater G-forces. If the vehicle structure can somehow limit the force by energy absorbing structures, they will have a chance. Otherwise, the G-forces could kill them even if strapped to their seat.

    To me, these have always looked more like an enclosed motorcycle ... only no helmet required. I would want something like a NASCAR or drag racer, safety seat, attached by sacrificial, mechanical struts, and a recessed head support. An active, 360 degree, accident avoidance system would be a good idea too.

    Volkswagen XL1 Review | Autocar

    L1 is now the much improved the xl1, and it is for sale in europe. Its expensive, its low run rate, but this is really a proof of concept for ultimate charge sustain efficiency. People want more creature comforts and speed when they are spending that much money. It is destined to a museum, while the bmw i8 serves as the most efficient sports car, the model S is the best selling bev (right now, leaf if you do cumulative), and the bmw i3 wins for best charge depletion efficiency with good range. Add the i3-rex, gen II volt, and gen IV prius eco, and there is not much space for the xl1

    For the price of a xl1, I think you an buy a tesla 70d + prius eco. Both cars are more comfortable, the 70d blazingly fast and handles well in snow, the prius eco for long trips or where you don't want to park your expensive car ;-) Less money 2017 i3-bev will get 124 miles on nedc, great for keeping the air clean in those european cities. Its going to cost less than that tesla, and it doesn't have that diesel emissions. The us gets the gen II volt a lot less money and pretty efficient. The i8 is not nearly as efficient as the xl1, but it looks a lot better and more fun to drive. there isn't really a spot for best charge sustain efficiency, since charge depletion is so much better according to the governments.
