Volkswagen unveils Jetta Hybrid for U.S. market, claims 45mpg

If it's anything like the last two VW's I've owned, I'll stick with the Prius.

 

cool first turbo hybrid that will go for efficiency. I would put the tch in the segment though, so first sub 9 seconds 0-60 is just wrong. Its good to have another player in the mpg game:rockon:

It will be interesting to see reviews, it looks like a car that should be able to hypermile well.

 

That sounds like one complicated transmission. Give me a PSD anyday.

 

VW turbo is liable to put many people off but the transmission should mean excellent highway performance.

Seems like typical assist hybrid, but with a couple of clutches for more efficient operation.

And that article mentioned the EV limit but missed the two more important things:
- It can glide up 84mph
- It has foot-off gliding

 

Basically, VW has two DSG transmissions, a 6-speed, wet clutch and a 7-speed, dry clutch. They both tend to have problems. My '09 had the 6-speed and was on the third mechatronics unit ( valve body ) when I got rid of it.

 

A VW with Toyota reliability would be a winner.:rockon:

 

I do not really like VWs, but know a number of woman that do. Its good to give them a hybrid choice with this fuel economy.

I expect that vw wanted the feel of higher torque which is why they chose a turbo instead of an atkinson. I know that they are planning to make a version of the 1.4 tsi that has 2-cylinder deactivation. Hypermilimg at a fairly constant 30mph this will act like a 0.7l 2 cylinder turbo. The electric motor should smooth this out and provide excellent fuel economy. Certainly many will not want a vw or a turbo, for for those that do this is a good option, ... that is if its priced competitively.

 

Ooh, now they're talking. Hypermilers who don't like executing NICE-OFF glides can now join the hardcore.

 

as i said in other thread, autobild tested q5 with similar setup, to rx450h awd, and rx was faster, bigger and got 25% better mpg in real life despite official numbers being the same.

q5 has 211 hp 4cly turbo, 8 speed at and lion batteries... it was also not smooth.

 

Exactly. This is a way inferior technology compared to PSD. It lacks simplicity and elegance PSD has and it's less efficient.

I, too, would be leery of the technology. At least, Prius gives you a bullet-proof transmission, making up for any increased expense exposure with the traction battery.

We will see the tests soon I guess... I bet it wont be good. Fusion/Mondeo Hybrid seems like it will do much better in real life.

VW electric gremlins + hybrid, what can go wrong? Will be fun watching VW hybrid and VW TDI fans savage each other over which is better.

 

It could be worse. Try Peugeot + hybrid!

Admittedly I do not drive like most Merkins, but I might drive like most people who care about fuel economy, and have an understanding of fuel saving techniques: on the highway I try to find the constant engine load that smooths out the elevation ups and downs. Meaning I tolerate more speed variation in order to avoid high engine load. 'Glide' at higher speeds is not an advantage for my highway driving, or at best a minor one.
