Is there anyway that one can use the voice commands for the navigation when the car is moving??

When i try to access one of thes commands, it said that command is not available while moving. Well, that's crappy? Why....and don't say it's a "safety thing", because it;s safer to activate a command via hands-free, than having to push a button.

    Any advice?

Let me preface this by saying that I don't use voice commands on my GIII Pri but used them extensively on my 07 Camry...

Yes, you should be able to use navigation voice commands while moving. What exactly are you doing? You should start the sequence by pushing the talk switch.

...and that's where I start. Then the lady comes on and asks me to select a command. If it's a command having to do with the phone, it's all good...I can make a call while moving. However, if the command has anything to do with the navigation (e.g., "pause navigation"), the beotch tells me not available while moving. Haven't seen any mention oif this in the manuals? I first noticed this when I asked to "zoom in" (which is a legal/recognized command). But only seems to work when stationary. Odd??

Try it on your GIII and see if it works while moving?? Once stopped, no problem.

Not according to page 48 of the Nav Owners manual, you can't?

    Cody,

I know exactly what you're talking about. If you do not start with the map displayed, it won't let you voice-command a navigation command. I don't have the "auto-switch" option turned on in my V, so I either have to do one of three things:
    • hit the MAP hardkey and accept the disclaimer
    • leave the map up on the screen
    • voice-command the navigation function a second time after the disclaimer auto-accepts
Basically, if the disclaimer hasn't been accepted since the key cycle, it will route you through that screen first, then you have to ask for the command a second time.

Well actually, I finally found in the Navigation System Owners Manual what I was looking for. What I want to do, according to the manual, you can NOT do while moving. For example, look on page 48, "Changing Map Scale". It says that this function/command (zoom in/out) "is only available when the vehicle is NOT moving". In fact, there's a long list of navigational/map commands that ONLY work when you are NOT moving.

That sucks. There should be a software fix. Not a flaw. Nothing is broken. Something in the software has a command line saying you can't execute X, Y or Z if the sensors on the car say it's moving.

That's really weird, I can change map scales up or down while driving with the + and - buttons on the bottom of the display. I do it all the time. After reading your post I went for a short drive and tried it just to be sure I hadn't dreamed it.

I remember doing it with another 2010 Prius also. When I took a test drive in June the salesman and I tried it because someone had said it wouldn't work. It worked fine on that car also.

EDIT: I just checked page 48 and I think the command that's not available is scrolling through the command list, the restriction does not apply to zoom in/zoom out. There are also several ways to enter a destination using the touch screen while moving. You can choose one of the top 4 destinations from your destinations list or an emergency destination, as well as some POIs.

Please re-read all of my posts on this thread. I am ONLY talking about the voice command while moving...and not using the + or - buttons at the bottom of the display. They work fine. The voice commands work when stationary, but not when moving. Again, you can not, according to page 48, make a VOICE COMMAND that zooms in/out (for example) while moving. It (also) doesn't work for most of the other navigation commands - by VOICE.

Drive in your car, activate the Voice Command button. Then see if you can "zoom in" (this is one of the recognized voice commands) - while NOT using any of the +/- buttons on the Nav screen? When I'm moving, it will not activate that voice command. When I am stopped, it works. What is your experience?

I took your advice and tried the voice commands for "zoom in" and "zoom out" while driving down the highway at 60 MPH, I tried each one several times and they work perfectly. I also stand by what I posted previously concerning the information on page 48 of the nav manual. It may not be organized to well, typical of the nav system manual, but the meaning is clear. It definitely does not say you can't use the zoom commands while moving, that statement is referring to the scroll commands.

Cody, I just tried my Voice commands for zooming in and out while driving this morning. It worked fine. I pressed the Voice Recognition button, then, after the beep said "ZOOM OUT" and the Navlady confirmed it and my Nav map showed a much larger area. I did the same for "ZOOM IN" and it responded the same- all the while moving in the car and without touching any of the Nav Screen. I was just driving with the map display on- wasn't set to any destination or anything.

    tumbleweed & bighouse,

Thanks for your posts. After reading (again) I went out and tried to repeat. Yes, you are both right, I can activate the "zoom in/out" command while driving...BUT, I can not access the "command list" while driving (audio only). What I was trying to do was first got to the "command list" and then say "zoom in". I thought you had to FIRST be in the "command list" folder (if you will) to be able to activate the "zoom in", or any other commands. Apparently, you do not. Thanks for helping out.

By the way, is there a written list somewhere of all the commands? Without scrolling through the list on the Nav screen, I can't find a list of all the commands in the manual.

Glad you got it to work for you, here is a .pdf voice command list you can print out.
