VAIS AIC-100i / SLI mode selection

Mine is supposedly coming today via UPS. Once I look at the instructions and install it, I'll see if I have an answer for you.

 

It is a bit annoying, but the ipod control makes it worth it. Maybe there is a way to eliminate the Aux from the selection? I'll have to ask vaistech.

It was a little annoying at first, but I'm very used to it now and don't find it an issue at all.
It would be great if there was a way for the aux input to only be present if cables are connected to it.

Using a FM Transmitter is Mind-bogglingly annoying. Having to cycle through to the iPod is a little inconvenient.

No Bob, it isn't. It will not fit in the plug where the existing connector is. I wish I could get a picture of the plug that was pulled out but it's too far under the dash to see well or get a digital shot of. If you look in the VAIS AIC-100i installation instructions, it shows a plug that DOES fit. The existing plug on the head unit is more rectangular & flatter.

 

Unless you have an external changer or Satellite radio, there should be nothing in the connection on the radio.

No external changer; no satellite radio. The directions say it plugs into the first socket and not the second. Your picture seems to show the second socket; is this correct?

 

Yes, that is the right connector. If you don't have XM, Sirius, or an external CD changer, the port is open on the back of the stereo. Let the male version of the plug hang loose behind the dash, plug the female portion into the radio.

FYI: Gender is determined by pins, not be pin housing.

There is an open port but it's the second port and the directions indicated pulling the plug out of the first port. Which port does it connect to?

You don't have to unplug anything, unless you have an external changer or sat radio.
Just plug the cable into the open connection.

Yes, I used Craig's directions with the exception of where the VAIS directions say to unplug the first connector and install it there. Well, this is wrong! Craig's directions are correct where you don't have to unplug anything. The unit works fine and I want to thank you, Nate & Craig for the help. Ironic, PriusChat.com has the correct instructions and VAIS has incorrect ones.

I'm glad it all worked out for you. Mine is on the way back to me with the flash upgrade to 3.5.

So not only did you get the SLI version, you got it overnight UPS. Mine is coming via ground ups and due in about a week! Oh well, I will hopefully never need anymore flash upgrades on it anyway.

 

Good to hear it is working.
I'm interested in seeing pictures of the SLI. Could you post a photo album on line?

From what I can tell (and I've never actually seen a real AIC-100i) the SLI and AIC-100i are very similar. The SLI has an integrated sound grounding loop adapter in it. It also has two "dip" switches for either "CD" or "MD" mode emulation (which you have to set once installed; mine is in "CD" mode emulation as I think it displays more text - song title, etc.). There is a electronic sound level adjustment you can do on the iPod so that the volume always starts at a preselected value (1 to 31). The case appears to be an aluminum one held together by screws and can be opened. There is a service port (covered) which I believe VAIS can use for firmware upgrades. As I found out, their installation directions are incorrect as they show plugging their unit into the first head connector when really it's the second one (arrow is pointing to wrong head connector).

not sure if yours works like mine, but i do have an aux connected (2 ipods) and i switch between the two by hitting the disc button on the front of the stereo. much easier than rolling around using the steering wheel buttons.

 

This is a much better way. I can't believe I've been cycling through to get to the iPod all this time.
I don't know why I never thought of this. Thanks for pointing it out!
