I'm looking at buying a used 2001 Prius. The dealer believes it will need a new battery as it will not hold its charge and multiple cells have already been replaced. My main question is, where can I get a used or new battery around Cincinnati, OH and for how much? I've heard I can get a salvage for around $200 to $500, but so far I can't find anything within 50 miles of Cincinnati. Any thoughts or suggestions?
If it were me and I were planning to drive it for a while, I'd just get a brand new battery at your nearest Toyota dealership. Otherwise, my second choice would be a refurbished battery from some place such as re-involt.
This is a good deal, a "new" OEM Hybrid battery for $2k installed in the Denver area...(dealer charges $3-$4k for same thing) Near New Gen 1 (2001-2003) Prius Hybrid (big) Battery Most Gen1 "junkyard" batteries are no good at this point..unless someone goes through and tests all the cells then groups cells with similar capacities together....this process requires special equipment and a lot of time. If you buy a used Gen1 battery, insist it comes with a warranty/return policy. Gen1 batteries are not that hard to install so you may be able to find a local shop/friend willing to help do it.
I have not seen a good used Gen 1 prius battery at that price in years. You are money ahead to spend more and get something from a supplier that will stand behind it. You never know, though. You might get lucky! Eric
Thanks for your replies, I ended up buying the car for $2,700 and a remanufactered battery for $2,200 at dealer price with a 18 month warranty. Thanks again!
