I just purchased a 2005, but it's the A package without the smart key. I was wondering if there was a way to upgrade to the smart key? And if anyone knows the cost?

Like the similar question about retro-fitting the Prius' built-in NAV, it's probably not possible. I'm guessing the non-SKS package doesn't have the necessary transponders/sensors and buttons built into the doors, dash etc.

But maybe there is an after-market SKS kit out there somewhere. If there is, I want to put it on the front door of my house B)

I second the notion of putting the smart key on the front door of your house. I have been thinking about how to do that every since I got my Prius. It would be so nice to just have to touch your doorknob and have it unlock. There is nothing stopping it from being done, all the technology is there, we just need someone to apply it. I've been meaning to look into how much it would cost to buy the parts for the SKS and try and retro fit my door, but have not have time to do it yet. Let me know if anyone knows about these parts and what would be required.

    Thanks

I did hear of such a device for a pet door... If your kitty can get in your house hands free, I'm sure you can... ;)

I was thinking if there's a device that is like a two part key... one that goes in your key slot that does not activate until the second part is within a certain distance... As for the door... well that's not that hard either... when you are within a certain distance, just activate the keyless entry... might require some software... so I would think after market would be entirely possible...

Oh well, I guess I should have bought a B package car...

I too would love this. There are RFID door locks out ther (e.g. this) but they all seem to use passive tags (such as are used for industrial building security) so you have to put the tag near the lock instead of being able to leave it in your pocket. If I have to pull it out of my packet, I might as well just use a key. :(

There's one for the Camry as well.

Or you could try the "wallet-size" smart key from the LS. It's the size of a CC but slightly thicker and it does fit in your wallet.
