everyone! I recently purchased a used 2013 Toyota Prius and I'm trying to figure out what wheels it came with. I measured them at 19", and they have a little "P" in the center which originally lead me to believe they were some kind of OEM rims, but I can't find them anywhere online. I'm just curious if anyone here knows where they came from.
They're 17" alloys (You have to measure just the rim, not the rim and tire). I believe they were part of an aftermarket (dealer-installed) package that SouthEast Toyota (SET) installed to some of their vehicles as extra profit margins.
The numbers on the side of the tire -- 215/45 R17 -- indicate it's a 17" wheel. 215 is the width of the tire tread 45 is the sidewall hight (represented as a percentage of the width) 17 is the size (in inches) of the rim it fits on
Thanks so much for the info, everyone! I have a couple of other (probably stupid) question. I've seen other threads on here where people have said that 17" wheels lead to worse MPG's. Do you find that's the case? Thankfully, I've still been getting around a 50 MPG average. Potholes also scare me more now than when I've driven a car with 15" wheels. Haha! And I'm assuming that since they're dealer rims, that doesn't negatively affect the speedometer or MPG reading?
Larger wheels are heavier, and that will impact mileage. Because Prius wheel/tire combos are kept at a "fixed" overall diameter, the larger wheel will use a tire with a shorter sidewall, as you noticed, putting the tire more in danger of "road hazards". On the positive side, the shorter sidewall flexes less in cornering, so the car is said to handle better. Some think it also looks better with larger wheels. So put on your sunglasses, be cool, and drive carefully.
