    The gen3 Prius has come in at 24th place for overall reliability on a UK survey of private owners.

    Most reliable cars | Auto Express

    It's not an anti Toyota survey though as the Toyota IQ came in at first place, Lexus came in a 2nd, 3rd and 6th place and the Toyota Rav4 came in at 7th. The Nissan Leaf came in at 8th.

    What has happened as it was only a couple years ago that the gen3 Prius came in at either 2nd or 3rd place?

    61000 surveys of over 200 models. At best, 305 samples per model and only 2% separating the top spot from the Prius.

    Fair point.

    But the survey has been more than accepted in past years when the Prius was #1 or #2. Suddenly it doesn't score as highly and then the survey is rubbished?

    ^^ And it will be #1 again when there is one or two less complaints.
    Grumpy, you are getting agitated over statistical noise.

    have you looked at the truedelta data?

    Toyota Prius Reliability

    I'm not seeing a drop off for reliability of Gen II or Gen III

    I wouldn't care if it's #1 or #20. No matter how you slice it, it's in the top 10% of over 200 vehicles surveyed. That's the bottom line. The only thing that should matter is whether YOUR vehicle have given YOU any trouble. If it hasn't, then it's #1 on your own survey, no?

    Funny how surveys work. You hear about this one and that one, quoting this and that... and neither myself or any one I know has ever been surveyed. Hum...:rolleyes:

    I've partaked a couple times.

    Having looked at the positions of Toyota, it appears the Japanese models have much better reliability than the UK/EU built ones;

    Out of the top 100 models rated Toyota came in as follows;

    IQ: 1st
    Rav4 MK4: 7th
    Prius MK3: 24th
    Yaris: 26th
    Auris MK2: 28th
    Avensis: 47th
    Rav4 MK3: 48th
    Verso MK1: 49th
    Prius MK2: 63rd
    Aygo: 66th
    GT86: 79th
    Auris MK1: 86th

    I notice the Japanese built models came in at the top of Toyotas ratings and many locally built cars are far from reliable. Maybe something is lost in translation when companies outsource their models?

    Toyota was always known for reliabiliy, yet it seems that this may no longer be the case. It also reflects my experience. Toyota: nice cars, nailed together :(

    if you own one, that's all that matters. if you're looking to buy, these surveys are useless.

    Just my thoughts:
    The guy at the bottom probably has more incentive to improve than the guy at the top so the differences narrow. Good enough today may not be good enough tomorrow. It's also harder & more expensive to improve when at the top and the improvement may not produce a tangible result.

    Local production is different. Owners of American & Japanese built LEAF say build quality has dropped and parts have become cheaper.

    Expectations change. When an infotainment system's most common adjective is "sucks" the car's going to take a hit in the survey. The car may be mechanically flawless but if it won't pair with a bluetooth phone or recognize a memory stick it's going to take a hit.

    Glad my Prius was built in Japan, sad to know that this will become a rarity in the future. Companies are looking at ways to save costs and building cars outside the mother country is one way, which in the long run will hurt Toyota and others in the future.

    they've always made the hycam here, i would say the build and parts quality are equivalent to the prius.
