Hi all, My wife got her Prius (2005 red), navi, leather in October and she loves the car. I enjoy driving it too. I'm considering buying a 2006 Seaside Pearl package 7 with leather seating added ( dealer said package 8 are near impossible to come by - I'll try to add leather wheelcover myself). I'll be giving up my 2005 Subaru GT Limited Turbo which I love to drive but am getting sick of sub 20 mpg with premium fuel required. I hope I don't miss my heated, power seats, moonroof, and 0 to 60 in just over 4 seconds, but with gas prices on the way up. I think this is something I need to do. Considered Honda Civic hybrid, but Honda dealer here is a PITA and it seems like Prius really gives more car for the $$$.
congrats! i only wish we could be a two prius family <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jennjay @ Apr 20 2006, 08:37 PM) </div> heated seats? in florida? some people are not too happy with the seats but if you're comfortable driving it, no worries right? moonroof can be added at a price, and a mpg hit. at least there was discussion of someone doing moonroof installs. 0-60 in just under the time it takes to reach the top of the onramp is fun too push the dealer, southeast toyota doesn't want to distribute package 8s for some reason, ask them to trade with another dealer and see what you can get. good luck!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jennjay @ Apr 20 2006, 05:37 PM) </div> News flash: It takes WAY more than 250hp to get a 3400lb sedan to 60mph in "just over 4 seconds". I'm quite familiar with the car, having bought my sister a 2006 GT Limited a few weeks ago as a gift. The Legacy GT Limited runs 0-60 in the low-fives, which is a long way from "just over 4 seconds" (Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo territory). You must've been on some good drugs when you imagined that.
Jennjay - First, have you confirmed that you NEED to put premium fuel into your Subaru? Probably not and you will save money while you wait or until you decide to purchase a Prius.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusenvy @ Apr 20 2006, 08:53 PM) </div> Sorry, I slipped on computer, meant just over 5 seconds, Premium fuel is required for the turbo according to all I've read and heated seats are still a nice option for aching backs > I can live without it and the moonroof too., its just nice to have. I'm geting a great deal on the package 7 with added leather, so I probably can't push for package 8 so hard.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(kkister1492 @ Apr 20 2006, 06:28 PM) </div> The whole reason you buy a car like a Subaru Legacy GT Limited and live with its crappy mileage is for the ability to tap into that 250hp and 250 lbs-ft of torque with your right foot at any time. Without premium fuel, the engine management computer will retard the timing so much that you will lose a lot of that power. So it seems pretty dumb to put regular fuel in the car and eliminate its #1 most desirable feature, which was probably the whole reason you bought it in the first place.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jennjay @ Apr 20 2006, 07:37 PM) </div> I use to own a 2004 Forester XT 5speed. I believe it's actually slightly faster than the Legacy GT due to the insanely low gearing, but it didn't handle as well. That car was a lot of fun to drive, but I traded it in for a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. Believe it or not, the fullsize Toyota Sequoia is actually CHEAPER to drive than my 2004 Forester was. I was getting about 16-18 MPG around town using premium fuel. Yes, premium is required because Subaru uses a highly turbocharged engine. The higher octane of premium prevents engine knocking with the higher engine temps on an turbo. Not only was the Forester bad on gas, it was bad for me too! My blood pressure was high and I always was driving too fast. Getting a Prius will be better for the environment and your health.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(galaxee @ Apr 20 2006, 05:46 PM) </div> I'm thinking of purchasing a Prius and I'm coming off a car with a big v8. I'm concerned about acceleration for safety reasons. From your comment it's not a problem - is that so?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jennjay @ Apr 20 2006, 05:37 PM) </div> I read elsewhere that adding heated seats is quite easy if you are doing aftermarket leather seats. Check it out.
Congrats. We are a two prius family. Came from a Honda Civic and a Ford F250. Heated seats were nice but since we have a garage I do not miss them all that much.
No longer a 2 prius family. Traded in my '06 seaside for an '08 Package 6 in blue mica. The dealer had added dvd headrest system to the car. Car looks real sharp. I was waiting for service on my 06 and saw this car come in, fell in love with the color and made a deal. A week later I traded in my wife's '05 salsa red for an '09 Camry hybrid magnetic gray, fully loaded with leather, navi, and sunroof. The salesman here loves me now, but I told him I'm good for hopefully 5+ years now. So we are no longer a 2 prius family, but are still a 2 hybrid family with 2 new cars
Congrats! We bought our 2nd Prius 3 weeks ago. We now have a 2006 Black with pkg. 1 & just got a 2008 with pkg. 2 and Toyota leather interior installed by the dlr. Way to go!
Thanks Walker1, Just a question. I live in Florida too and run AC constantly, but usually 72-74. How the heck are you getting that gas mileage? I thought I was doing well in the mid 40's, but always attributed my lower mpg to running the ac all the time.
The ac doesnt take much from your average. it's all in the driving brother. I get 50.3 usually but have seen 53 when I was driving like it. Im usually on I-4 so 45-55 mph isnt possible. The little car is capable of a lot more!
Yes its all about driving technique, I also notice very little impact from AC use as I take the highway about 75 % of the time. The AC will kill you in constant stop and go driving though. As far as two Prius family, I wish we were a 2 Prius Family. Not because of gas mileage though, but because my wife's VW Beetle 1.8T is a POS. I am so sick of working on that car with a minor problem one month and a major the next. At least the positive side of me is thankful that since I like to dig in and do a lot of my own car work that I have had the opportunity to learn a lot about VW 1.8t engines.
Most of our driving is city driving. We just drive the Prius's for maximum milege. Tire pressure is very important as is driving the car. We keep 42 lbs. in the front tires & 40 lbs. in the rears. Also, we brake or coast to red lights & stop signs well in advance. We average 50 MPG or so @ 70 MPH on the highway & use the cruise control both in town and on the hwy. I think the cruise is a big help. Do you use the cruise control often?
