I bought the Carista Android plug on Amazon for about $22 plugged it in and downloaded the app that's free for a week. i turned off the reverse beeps and the seat belt beeps. There's a million other things too but I didn't need any of the others, well worth the $22. It took me all of about 3 minutes. Didn't even need to read any instructions. It was simple as it possibly could be. I took pictures of all the pages of settings if anybody wants them.

What's the legality of turning off seat belt beeps?

who knows... i know my old cars didnt have beeps and that was factory. it is a feature the dealer can set but why should i pay a dealer to do it. i doubt the dealer would have that option in the settings if there was a problem with it, and they take a class to learn the settings adjusting

Legality aside, what's the stupidity quotient of doing that ?
    Clue: VERY high.

It is available as a customization in TechStream and listed in the manual. If it were illegal in the US, it would not be available. That does not mean there are not state or local legal issues though.

    Not true at all.
A really LOT of things that are not legal in the US are still "available".

In this case, manufacturers might be legally required to provide that feature but owners probably aren't prohibited from disabling it.
Interestingly enough though, riding in a vehicle without having a seatbelt ON IS illegal in most states now.

In the States? I don't know. It varies by country so it may not apply to Australia or Canada. I know the passenger side is customisable but I don't know if the driver's side is. In the North American owner's manual, it is listed as a dealer customisable feature.

For other members/guests that are reading this: If your country requires or at least gets bonus points for safety items such as the seatbelt reminder, then the option to turn it off will not be present and therefore we are not responsible for any legal issues present or future that arises from the removal of said reminder/buzzer/chime.

I turned mine off because my dog sits on the front seat and does not wear her seat belt...

    Good suggestion.

It is definitely part of EURO-NCAP and ANCAP (Aust) assessment. I couldn't find the scoring protocol in full, but I believe that a car wouldn't get 5*****s if it didn't comply. And Insurance premiums are based, in part, on that assessment. Disabling it without informing your insurance company could render your insurance policy VOID. EURO-NCAP says that it is a REQUIREMENT, not a recommendation.

I wouldn't like to be the one standing before the judge trying to justify my decision to disable the warning.

With my dogs, they're light so don't "usually" trigger the weight sensor, but I strap them in with one of these - which is almost always plugged into the seat-belt anyway.

I hope, for both your sakes, she is safely restrained. Our. Dogs travel safely in tethered crates.
Dog projectiles are dangerous for human and animal.

Also worth remembering, is that it could be recorded in the Event Data Recorder, which could be interrogated, and be admissible in a Post-Mortem investigation.

Here, seatbelt use is recorded by the EDR.

Seatbelt use is important. The passenger seat has a scale that is used to identify if the seat is occupied, and if so, is the occupant a child or an adult. Dogs and packages can be heavy enough to qualify for the warning buzzer. I turned off the passenger side warning to avoid that irritation.

I doubt that there is a legal requirement that owners keep the seatbelt warning. In any case, how is a cop going to find out? Or even if it is discovered, it would qualify as a "fix-it" ticket like a burnt out bulb. Most police have far more important things to do than chase down seatbelt buzzer offenders...

To prepare a report to the coroner, the vehicle would be impounded and, the EDR report could be checked out. Here, the Forensic Crash Team are very thorough in piecing together data.

There is a difference between a seatbelt and a seatbelt buzzer. And I really doubt that your Forensic Crash Team knows squat about using Carista to turn off the buzzers. As for the backup buzzer, how about putting it outside the car where it might do some good. Inside, it's just an irritating confirmation that you moved the shift lever.

The back-up buzzer is fine - not a mandated design requirement. I think most of us got the dealer to cut it to just one beep on delivery.

I read somewhere it was mandated because the shift lever returns to center, not indicating the vehicle is in Reverse.

Can you not latch the passenger belt and LEAVE it that way ??

Disabling safety features is NOT a good thing to do, no matter what your excuse.
