Trunk door opens really fast!

    We have acquired a 2017 Prius v.
    Loving it. But, I'm surprised how fast the trunk hatch opens. It could easily hurt someone. I'm wondering if this is "normal" for the 2017 v, or if we need to get something fixed.

    It means you have good gas struts. I would be happy to swap you for my worn struts.

    Usually getting bumped in the head once is enough to get used to it.

    The real issue is when you leave the hatch open and close the garage door on it.

    I guess you could check to make certain it is equipped with genuine Toyota lift struts, but it is worth pointing out that the car has to be able to handle a very wide range of conditions. You might still be within them.

    Strong lift now is possibly an annoyance, but it needs to be that way so that it still just barely gets out of somebody's way at -50°F in January, somewhere.

    Agreed here. Toyota's lack of knowledge in rust prevention got me on another part, with one of my struts badly rusted where the seal is, and the strut recently lost all pressure as a result. Therefore, you have to hold it open with your shoulder/head while loading stuff. I have to remember to order new struts. Considered upgrading to a Rav4 hybrid, but then saw their faulty high voltage cable design that certainly will not survive long in road salt heavy upstate NY.

    Too fast could be bad too. I think I had gotten replacement struts for my Pontiac Vibe that were too fast for comfort, but I don't think there's anything you can really do since you can't adjust pressure or dampening within the struts.

    may be the first complaint i've read about too powerful struts

    I swapped out our aging hatch shocks, with Rock Auto aftermarket. The only issue: they're a bit too powerful, to were you you need to keep a hand on it going up, and push almost till it's closed to avoid it reversing and going back up. I'm going to give them time, hopefully will lose a bit of their oomph as they age.

    Maybe someone did similar with your acquisition?
