I converted the van to pure electric a few years ago. I haven't dropped the hammer on it yet. The prius is in the garage starting it's teardown. I am doing a valve job and bowl work on the head for my gen II car. I'll get some pics of the subi as I go, but I have been trying to figure out whether to ACTUALLY drive the Subaru, in it's current form capable of 90 it is terrifying to drive. I want to make sure I'm going to use it!

The original "power unit" was like a motorcycle engine/trans unit. It includes the differential as well. I made a shaft on the lathe that had the same journal sizes as the original crankshaft, and on the air cooling fan end of the engine, I used a Browning bushing and a 2 inch wide belt. It is slightly overdriven, but is great on accelerations still. The range with the 170v, 60AH pack is only about 65 miles, which is just about what I need for running around. It charges in 3.5 hours though, so I can charge it a couple times on a Saturday while I'm doing house or car projects. The only reason I want the Prius engine in there, is for long distances, but to be honest, I can't tolerate being in it for more than 60 miles! It is more like driving a golf cart than a car. It is only 10 feet long and about 4.5 feet tall. Two adults can't really sit that well on the front seat together, the passenger has to move his left leg for the driver to shift! I rarely use 1st gear 4th is good for highway speeds though. The original top speed is about 53 miles/hour with a 20hp two cylinder two stroke. Originally they got 66 miles/gallon in 1969.

JB, I think you may have issues with the width of the chassis on that car, is it wide enough to fit the Prius engine/transaxle and inverter? The inverter could be remotely mounted if you needed to, longer cables can be made for mg1 and mg2, no problem. Just make sure you put shielding on them to keep them quiet, and keep coolant in mind, you have to be able to air bleed the coolant lines to the inverter when you are done. The VW van EV project I am working on at the moment for a customer was supposed to be a hybrid conversions using a gen 1 Prius, but the car met an untimely demise so she wanted to go full electric instead. The hardest part is integrating the brakes I think. Thats why I went with the gen 1. The brake system is simpler. And...thanks Bill. It was a labor of love at the time. God knows I didn't have much money for the conversion. The whole thing cost me about 5k. Not too bad. It started with lead acid, but FLA batteries make terrible electric cars. I triples my range and acceleration when I went to Lithium.
