In the morning I notice that when I put the transmission in gear I can hear it slightly "grind". or "click" repetitively really fast. I know this car doesn't have any gears so what could this be? And it only happens when the car has been started for the first time in atleast 20hrs. please help, I just noticed it saturday night and My dealer is closed on Monday.

Are you sure the clicking isn't when you depress the brake before putting it in gear? I hear my brake accumulator click slightly each morning before/during start up.

No its a grind, I try to recreate the sound by putting it back into park and into gear again, ... and it doesnt happen again. I guess I better just take it in on tuesday, I just hope that it doesn't cause damage to the transmission.

There's no transmission in the car. It's just a fixed gear-set that that is permanently engaged, so you can't really damage it except by running into something really solid at a really high speed. Even then you'll break other things firts :)

I'm with Efusco in suggesting it's your brake accumulator pump. You only usually hear it once or twice in a long drive, and it sounds like a buzz, or lots of clicks in sequence, and it's perfectly normal. The car will probably make a few other sounds you're not used to as well, but most are not something to worry about.... unless you're like me and you hear a moaning sound coming from under the cargo area. Maybe I'll get that checked out some day if it doesn't go away on its own :D

It's not the transmission. If you have anyone else you know that has a Prius ask them to sit in the car and listen to the sound. I'm betting it's normal. There are a few other sounds that occur right at the time of start up... There's a clicking in the back of the car as the relays to the traction battery connect, but it isn't really a 'grinding'.

There's the coolant transfer pump for the thermos...in cold weather it can be a loud stuttering whine that may sound like a grind to some...it usually occurs just as the ICE starts up. If you're sure it's not the brake accumulator (still my first guess w/ the timing) then it's probably the coolant pump.

I would not make special trip to take the car in for this in any case...ask about it when you go for your next regular maintenance but I very seriously doubt it's important.

You might want to get that checked before warm weather.

Well, it seems to go away for a while when I throw a slab of meat under the mat back there, so as long as that works I won't bother my dealer's shop with it.

Yeah, I had the same moaning sound from the cargo area, but it was my mother-in-law :p

Its not anything to do with the start-up, Its only when it is placed into gear. Its actually reminding me of the sound my 86 accord made when I useto put it in reverse. I'm sure its not something serious but I should take it in to ease my mind. although I haven't heard it lately. Oh well

you step on the brake when you shift out of park.

could be the brake accumulator pump.

stand on the brake pedal for a minute and see if it won't happen again.

I recently bought a used Prius v and it’s doing what is described on this thread. It happens at start up but maybe 25% of the time. To me it sounds like it’s coming from the driver side dash area.
Does anyone have any new info on this grinding noise? Any response back from a Dealer on having it checked out?
