Toyota to Premiere Tj CRUISER at Tokyo Motor Show 2017 | TOYOTA Global Newsroom

I didn't actually notice that this one was a hybrid until I saw Jalopnik's article mentioning it. The engine being a 2.0 is interesting, as that means there's a new engine choice here - this has been rumored as necessary for the Lexus UX, which has been trademarked as a UX 250h for its hybrid variant. No word on whether it'll be a 3ZR engine or a Dynamic Force engine.

Interesting, because the model is called TJ, so it means it could have a TR-engine(?)

Pretty sure that that particular format of designations is long-dead in marketing names - the FJ Cruiser did not have an F engine of any variety, instead it had a 1GR-FE.

And, we know it's TNGA-based and FWD-based - the only engine families in FWD-based TNGA cars so far are NR (C-HR with 8NR-FTS), ZR (Prius and C-HR with 2ZR-FXE, C-HR with 3ZR-FAE), GR (Camry with 2GR-FKS), and Dynamic Force (Camry with A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS). That old TR engine is for RWD-based trucks, and it's older than the families used in TNGA.

I love the FJ. I don't like that they made this so boxy.

    Dear Mercedes - Please take note . . . .
You are no longer the manufacturer of the vehicle with the worst drag CD.

Toyota goes to the bottom run of the ladder now. Congratulations! Job well done.
(good thing it's a hybrid ... it'll need all the help it can get.)

I don't know, I see some elements of the shape that could lead to a surprisingly low Cd.

If the styling stays close to the concept, I wouldn't be surprised by a 0.34 or less. Compare to 0.54 for the G-Wagen, which is an actual 1970s design.

I duno . . . . . . It's awfully boxy. During the early 2000s we had an overly boxy car ... a Range Rover. It had a horrible drag CD. And hey, check out those rims.
OMG - did Toyota pick those up right out of the range rovor archive catalog? Or what.
I must admit - I certainly thought they were highly stylish .... 1½ decades ago

But let's end this on a double complimentary note. #1 - most concept vehicles never come to Market without significant redo's. And #2 (deja vu) That thing actually makes the Mirai look a little less hideous.

Baahh - what do I know, I thought the Avalanche and AMC Pacer would never sell, but people even bought those things, so who knows. Just because it looks like a Hummer doesn't necessarily mean anything - apparently.

Whenever I see concept vehicle, and a mock up of that concept vehicle my approach is to just wait until/if I see it in person.
Yeah, my first impression is it's pretty boxy looking. BUT...sometimes that can be good...I always liked The Element. Anyway, I would just wait until..or if, I get the chance to ever see it in the tin.

Yes, this car maybe the one to replace our Sienna minivan that is being used more like cargo van now. I just have to wait to see what kind of fuel economy this minivan/SUV combo hybrid is going to offer.
