Toyota to make Prius with China FAW group as early as 2005

TOKYO : Leading Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. will launch Chinese production of the popular Prius hybrid sedan as early as next year in collaboration with China FAW Group Corp., a news report said.

Through local production of the environmentally conscious vehicle, Toyota seeks to enhance the Prius' brand recognition and help make the hybrid car popular in the Chinese market, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

The move will mark the first overseas production of the Prius, the newspaper said.

Ahh.. the cold swim from Victoria to Port Townsend then the crawl on the stumps of my knees to your area would be worth it. We made a terrible error 3 years ago and tried the "lease" route which is up 10 Dec 04. With luck we'll have two cars for a month and a half. The only thing a lease provides up here is a guaranteed price if you bought it at the end of the lease plus the taxes on that price which here is 14.5%. Never again!

I got the impression that any Prii made in China would be sold in China. Anyone know if that's true?
