Toyota Recalls 418,570 Vehicles

I like the MSNBC version of the article:

The total number of affected US Prii is <span style="color:#FF0000">8,476!!! What? The Echo and Yaris? Oh yeah - 24,490. Almost forgot.

And everytime the word "Prius" is mentioned, it's always a "hybrid Prius." Thanks for pointing out the obvious, MSNBC/AP. Now how about mentioning the fact that the recall has absolutely nothing to do with the hybrid system?

 

"The recall comes after police investigated three Toyota officials on suspicion of professional negligence in allegedly shirking recalls for eight years and not fixing a defect that may have caused an accident."

Wow! If we had that type of system here in the US, I think the Help Wanted section would be full of perpetually running “Officials Wanted†advertisements for GM and Ford. :blink:

Really? I don't know of any recall that's been sat on for over 10 years in the US. Toyota is getting the black eye they truly deserve on this.

 

where's it say 2004-05 Priii? I read it as 2001 Prii are affected, and just for the oil-leak engine part. The turbine was for vans (hino)? and what would be the turbine, the fan at the front of the engine?

PS I'm sure this will affect sales...not! And to be sure, it's not good for ANY car company to shirk their recalls, but Ford has to be forced to litigation to do theirs. Really, google it. It's true.

the good year tire recall was almost 10 years and would never had happened if no one had died over it

looks like this is only for vehicles manufactured in 01.

I've never been through a recall before, but my 2002 was also manufactured in late 2001 and might be part of this as well. Question - I bought my Prius a few years ago from the original owner, so does Toyota ever try to update their ownership records for sending out notices? I do have my Prius serviced at a Toyota dealer, but I don't know if this info gets used for the recall notices. In general should I be contacting someone at Toyota or other manufacturers to update some ownership database when I buy a used car, to be properly informed of recalls?

6,725 vehicles for Japanese market
The other about 11,000 2001 Prius over-seas are affected, I believe.

I think you'll hear the VIN range soon from the TMS USA.

If I just read that, without knowing which car was recalled, I would jump to the wrong conclussion it was the recent Prius line recalled. Sheesh.

 

Earlier today we filed a Defect Information Report with the NHTSA regarding certain 2001 through 2002 ECHO and Prius vehicles involving the connector for the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

So as this applies to Prius in the U.S., the voluntary recall covers approximately 8,500 2001 through early 2002 model year vehicles with a production range from late January 2001 to October 2001.

Our letters via first class mail to affected Prius owners will begin mailing in August. Toyota dealers will replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor at NO CHARGE to affected Prius customers. Customers may call our Customer Experience Center at 800-331-4331 with additional inquiries.

Hope this helps clarify the information being posted earlier today about this campaign.

 

I don't understand the heat generated by recalls. These are modern events. There were no recalls on cars in the '50s. Something was wrong with your car, tough.

When a company lets me know of a problem on the most complicated piece of goods I own and offers to fix it, at my convenience, for FREE, I lay down on the floor and kick my feet in the air a lot. This is a cause for joy, not gloom! I think it is the epitome of spoiled to think that everything I buy, especially a state-of-the-art, high-tech marvel like the Prius, is going to arrive bug-free. Recalls are GOOD news!
