I had my a/c recharged in April and it was blowing hot again by July. I brought it back in today and they told me that it is leaking out of the Schrader valve on the low pressure side. They told me that they would have to replace the entire line which would cost a few hundred just in parts. Why can't they just replace the valve. The tried calling auto stores for a special part, but could not find one. Any advice on how to seal or repair just the leaking Schrader valve and not the entire line?
It can be "replaced". It just screws in, and yes they can be turned in with a special longer version of the Schrader valve tool. I will bet that when the tech unscrewed the low side hose, it turned the valve open. It's amazing it lasted this long. Those are some great valve caps. LG-D851 ?
if they did try to tighten the valve core (which an honest tech would do) and it still leaks, the core should be replaceable. if the seat for the core is damaged somehow, then the line would need replacing. but I would call a local independent parts store that doesn't suck if you have one, and see if they can get a Schrader valve core. the dealer might just be trying to hose you if all you need is a screw in valve core.
