Toyota juices ranks of hybrid-trained 'techs'

    Toyota juices ranks of hybrid-trained 'techs'

    Toyota Motor Sales USA is boosting the number of technicians who are qualified to maintain its hybrid vehicles.

    At the end of 2004, the automaker had 3,480 technicians trained to work on Toyota hybrids. Bill Bergen, the University of Toyota's national dealer education manager for operations and technical training, says he expects that number to rise to 5,000 in 2005.


    That total includes 1,000 technicians certified this year to service Lexus hybrids, Bergen says. The University of Toyota, in Torrance, Calif., is a company training program for dealership and corporate employees.

    If the company reaches its goal, one-third of the 15,000 Lexus and Toyota service technicians in the United States will be qualified to repair hybrids. All of Toyota Division's roughly 1,200 U.S. dealerships employ at least one hybrid technician, Bergen says.

    from what i understand they're changing their requirements for prerequisite classes for techs to take the hybrid training, to meet demand this year. rather than having the toyota master cert finished up, my husband has to have a toyota certification (base level) and finish a bunch of prerequisite classes along the way to toyota master.

    though, the training itself stresses how not to get yourself killed working on the cars more than the ins and outs of thier operation, from what the hybrid techs at DH's shop have said. i guess that would explain their 'emphasis on safety.'

    Why do you need a Prius Tech, can't any joker change the oil (hopefully nothing but oil changes are needed for most ppl)

    I have now changed my own Prius oil myself 3 times. A green belt perhaps on my way to becoming a master.
