With respect....I think that the real 'in fashion' trend is CUV, which explains the success of offerings like the RAV-4, both wireless and PHEV flavors.
BEV-CUVs are selling well.....even Chevy's underwhelming Bolt sold more units in 2020 than in 2019 (20,000.)

While it is true that Tesla is still the far and away leader in BEVs - there's far more interest in the automotive world for CUVs than sedans....for all of the obvious reasons.

 

Aside, the 2022 Bolt will have an EUV version in addition to the hatchback.

 

That depends on your definition of "equivalent car".

My C can get close to 50 mpg in non-freeway use at moderate speeds.
I don't think that there are ANY current production sub-compact cars on the market that get only 25 MPG or less.

 

I think that the last year during Covid, gas has not been a huge concern of people. No matter how hard core some are, most want a new Expensive vehicle to be fun to drive. When my son went out and bought a really low mileage GTI last year, I took it for a spin. It's been a long time since I was driving and smiling at the same time. LOL. A real reason that Camry hybrids and Rav4 hybrids sell well, they feel like driving a real car.

 

My son bought a PP and filled up for the first time this week. He commutes to work for free. Hybrids back. Charges for free because of his solar credits. I suspect he is getting the equivalent of more than 50 MPG.

 

I would certainly hope so. Much more I would think.
But conventional hybrid technology is not likely to get twice the mileage of a truly "equivalent" non-hybrid car.
