Toyota - skeptical about all-electric cars, but amazingly optimistic about hydrogen fuel cell cars.
According to Matt Harrison - Executive Vice President, Sales, Toyota Motor Europe, the Japanese manufacturer believes that within 10 years, prices of hydrogen fuel cell cars will match hybrid car prices.

"By the third generation we fully expect fuel cell costs to be comparable with hybrids. We believe fuel cell vehicles have a huge potential,"

When we look at the current prices in the U.S. the FCVs cost roughly twice as much as regular hybrids:

    • Toyota Mirai (FCV): from $58,500 ($43,500 after deducting $15,000 in fuel over three years)
    • Toyota Prius (HEV): from $23,770

That's incredibly optimistic (When was the first FCV supposed to debut? Just after the turn of the millennium, wasn't it?)

Sooooo where they have hydrogen for sale, the Mirai is the best selling car right?

My apologies, I mispoke. Where they have hydrogen for sale, the Mirai is the best selling EV, right? RIght? @hill must know.

You're saying that in the year 2009 or earlier, Toyota said that the cost of fuel cell cars would be comparable to hybrids within 10 years?

They're going to double the price of the Prius? Crikey...

(hey, the article doesn't specifically cite a reduction of any price)

Fuel cell only vehicles make no more sense than battery only vehicles.

Both would be better joined with the other - fuel cells could be 1/10th the power and thus 1/10th the cost, and batteries could be 1/10th the energy and thus 1/10th the cost.

Well I could drive my Tesla from Alabama to California and pee on a 'Fuel cell only' vehicle . . .

Well, when batteries hit the 1,000Wh/kg that fuel cells hit 15 years ago and when you can add 400 miles of range in 5 minutes, let me know okay?

Well, my post is about how fuel cell prices could match hybrids - by making them hybrids, specifically plug-in-hybrids.

It's a shame that BEVs will likely reach the same total ownership cost as a traditional car in Europe then.

Now, if a non-hydrogen FCEV can cost as much as a hybrid in ten years, that could be exciting news for plug ins.

IIRC, the Clarity FCX had 5000psi tanks, so this system likely can't fully fill the current Clarity or Mirai. It will also take as long to refuel a car as it does to home charge a BEV. Using the unit to charge a BEV would provide as much usability.

But Honda should be acknowledged for trying to make hydrogen cars feasible for people, as oppose to using the "we aren't an energy company" excuse.
