I am so bummed, I was giving my baby a wash yesterday and found a scratch! A blemmish! It's not too bad, but I can't just leave it there so I figure I have to use some touch up paint.
The problem is that I have limited coordination when it comes to fine work like this. On my last car, any touchups I did were rather obvious. Anyone have any tips on how to do the touch up well?

I only do it myself if it is a little mark on the front bumper from rocks. Just have a steady hand and you will probably pull it off. Brad might know a good way. 8)

The best thing to do with touchup paint is to do small applications, slowly.

First off, make sure you get the toyota touchup paint - they can order a colour specifically for your car.

Next, follow the instructions that come with the touchup paint regarding priming the applicator and using a small piece of cardboard to make sure you don't have too much paint loaded on the "pen".

Then just use tiny, tiny dabs to drop the paint into the scratch. Resist the urge to rush and "paint" - you just want to use the tip of the applicator to "dot" tiny drops of paint into the scratch (they'll spread-out when they get in there).

After a bit of filling, take a break for an hour or so to let the paint dry, then come back and check-out your work. If it's good, then use the clearcoat side of the pen to seal it, if not, dab a bit more paint on, then wait for it to dry again to see how it turned out.

The main thing here is not to rush. Pick a day where you've got a couple hours free so you have time to do a good job.

I scratched my bumper rather severely backing into a post. Got the touch-up paint from my dealer. He said that the most important thing to remember is to shake the paint bottle VERY, VERY thoroughly. I did so; I used it; and the places where I used it are virtually un-noticable.

Toyota's touchup paint does not have 2 sides, nor does it have any instructions... Didn't even say to "Shake well before using"

If there's standard rules when you just have a 1/2 oz tube, I'd say include that, because Toyota basically leaves you on your own

The Toyota paint that I got does - it's a 2-sided pen with the paint on one side, and clearcoat on the other. It also came with a fold-out instruction pamphlet.

Maybe they're getting a different kind in your area.

thanks for reminding me to go out and apply a bit more in a scratch on the rear quarter and a bit of clear coat on the chip on the hood. Also have the pen with colour and clear coat.

    Scratch and paint questions

Hadn't even made the first payment before my bike rack scratched an area approx 1" x 1/4" right to the base. Called Toyota Collison; they told me to get silver touch up paint and they'd help me apply it. I got the equivalent of a largish bottle of nail polish--not a pen. The clear finish is supposed to be built into the paint.
They dabbed it on; said it would settle down. Instead, it was bumpy and "blushed"--the color went flat and light gray. Brought it back, they dabbed some more on. Man who helped said sometimes it helps to "pick" at the paint--like stir it up very gently once it's been applied so the silver stays on the surface. I wouldn't do it--and didn't see him doing it either.
Paint is still bumpy; first guy said if I came back in a couple weeks he'd sand the edges. Sand it? Huh?
Frankly, either I'm gonna get used to it or shell out the dough to have it repainted (it's the long narrow piece right below the window on hatch.)
I thought about sanding down the bumpiness, then reapplying paint. But the way this is going, I'm sure I'll get another ding somewhere else in the not too distant future. Best to let it go, don't you think?

Still love the car. Always will.

I've 'touched-up' front bumper and hood areas from rock chips using the 'factory' Seaside blue touch-up paint from my dealer. Over 9 dollars! Does NOT match my Seaside pearl. Touchup seems to be shinier. In regular outdoor light, you can really see where the rock chips used to be. I'd really like to get the clear bra type stuff installed, matter of $ right now. At least there are no more black dots, just bluer and shineier dots. Oh well, the car still rocks. Love my Prius!

    DaveG (or anyone who knows),
Do you have a specific part number for the dual ended Toyota Touch-up paint? I went in today to order one and all they have is the 'fingernail polish' type of brush on. Not the pen type. The parts lady was a little snide in saying that Toyota doesn't have that type.

I'd like to call her and snidely give her the parts number to look up. Although, it may be a regional thing and not available for ordering in this region.

Finally, someone, sometime, posted a good link for an aftermarket source of touchup paint...if you could repost within this thread that would be great. The scratches I have to touch up are very thin and shallow and I think the 'fingernail polish brush will be a bit of an overkill.

Mine said five minutes (!). And he mentioned *don't* store touchup paint in the car because heat will ruin it.

Evan there is no part number per say on the pen type. It has the paint code on it, in my case Silver Sand Met.
    Paint code: 1C5
    230201
I says on it Toyota Touch Up Paint, but no part number that would give it an identity at the dealer. I'll google it and see if anything come up.

    Howdy,
On my Boxster I used to use product called Langka. After you use your dealer provided touch up paint, you take this langka product and put it on a tightly knitted cloth like an old soft bed sheet pulled over applicator(old credit card). You lightly rub the applicator over the touched up paint bump. It is basically chemical sanding. It wears down the bump left by the touchup paint. Amazingly enough it does not seem to effect the surrounding paint(I wouldn't leave it on there over night or anything, follow the directions, wipe off the excess). It takes some practice, the first couple of times you will wear too much away and have to repeat an application of touch up paint. Once done it will leave a dull unpolished spot where the scratch was, so you will need to follow with some polish after it has fully dried.
I ordered mine directly from langka.com, I think it was like $20 for a small bottle.

P.S. I am no way affiliated with langka. And I am not yet a Prius driver, but I do play one on television.

If you're interested, I could order one for you from the dealer here and send it your way. If you're interested, just PM me. I've gotta head out to the dealer in a couple weeks for an oil change anyway, so I could pick it up then. Was $12.54 cdn including tax.

Curious. My bottle (not pen) says code 1C0. I saw the Toyota reference booklet at the dealer to confirm that this was the code for Prius '04 Millennium Silver. Do Canada and the US get different paint?

As requested, here's a pic of the touchup pen I got from Toyota Canada (which is what's listed on it). It's clearcoat on one end, and the other end matched to the colour of your paint.

The actual "pen" tips are similar to the material in a sharpie or other marker. It's hard to see from the photo, but the tips are wedge-shaped (this picture shows the wider part of the wedge, not the edge).

The only markings on it are:

    Millenium Silver
    Paint Code: 1C0
    230403

It may be something that Toyota Canada has come up with instead of selling the paint bottles. I'm pretty happy with it though, the pen tip allows for very easy applications and the colour match is close enough that it's invisible at a foot or so (at least on silver)

Frank has two Priuses, an 04 and a classic, so I'd assume that's for the classic.

You can use a toothpick or needle instead of the brush that comes with the bottle of paint. It works well for thin scratches. Better to put too little paint than too much.
