I'm torn between a new 2015 pkg2 and used 2012 pkg3. I really trust Toyota reliability and engineering, but I'm having a hard time deciding. The price difference factoring in interest financing is about $5,000 and the 2012 pkg3 w/ nav is clean w/ only 30,000 miles plus CPO. I want to save money as much as possible, but $5,000 worth a new car given I'm confident the 2012 will last just as long. I can't decide! :-(

Are there features in the 2015 model you wanted the justify the $5000 besides it being used?

There were a few cosmetic changes but mechanically the cars are the same. From what I recall the main differences are mainly aesthetic; are the front bumper, side mirrors with side blinkers and interior trim color changes. The major difference I notice is actually the navi. That to me is very convenient option on the 2012. That, the $5k and you noting you want to save money sound right to me.

With the new model now released, seems like you should be able to get a great deal for the 2015 IF you choose that route.

Statistically the 2012 won't last as long as the 2015 because it is 3 years older. The $5000 is paying for 30000 miles and 3 years of wear and the warranty. That works out less than $0.17/mile. If you don't want the additional features in the Three the 2015 seems to be the better deal.

The Nav is garbage and probably has 3 year old data. The only thing worth money on the three is the 3 door SKS and that's only useful if you often drive with children.

Having said that, I'd gladly put $5000 in my pocket for 30k miles. There are no differences between a 2012 and 2015. Conversely, I would gladly pay $5000 for a three year newer car for the extra reliability.

In other words, a $5k delta is insufficient to say one is better than the other. The way I'd choose would be the other things. How important is a garbage Nav to you. If you don't have a smartphone, then it is better than paper maps. How materialistic are you? Driving a brand new car is a better show off than a used car? Do you have a family where 3 door SKS will save you time? Etc...

my '12 with 38,000 miles is like brand new. for 5k less, plus the extra options (if you want them) i'd go for it.
