Time to Crack Open the Manual

Not a great idea - but if you do - be sure it is rated to carry the load you want to charge at with some safety factor.

The default is 8A and the CCID/EVSE will use it all 120v at 8A.

I plug directly into a 15A GFI protected single outlet circuit, and set the car to "Max" charging. The CCID/EVSE pulls 120v at 12A (1440-1470W).

I saw a 25 foot 15A 12 guage extension cord advertised at Home Depot's website, but extension cords and high amperage for extended periods of time are not a good idea.

 

I use a premium quality 12Gauge 25 feet extension cord....and changed the 120V receptacle plug for a high quality grade, I measure the temp at the receptacle on occasions to make shure I have a good contact so the plug stays cool

 

You want to look at cords sold for high power tools. Short as possible; less than 25ft can be found. Even consider upgrading to a cord with a higher rating. That becomes a must as the cord gets longer.

For those unfamiliar, the gauge number system is inverted; higher number, thinner wire. Getting metal wires of sheets down to a certain thickness involves putting the piece through successively smaller and smaller dies. The gauge valve is the number of dies it has been through.

 

We've got a Tesla 3 in the driveway right now, it's charger plugged into a 25' 12 gauge extension, into a 120 volt outlet. It's just for this week. Hopefully ok.

it will be fine. tesla (and all ev's) can only charge based on supply

 

Yep, our 2017 was my first-ever experience with hybrids and the only car I've ever read the Owner's Manual cover-to-cover! From the strange noises from the electric motors in the evap system out in the garage, at all hours of the night to the whirring of the regen brake system when opening up the driver's door! (And that was even before they added the VERY annoying UFO speaker to them!!)
