This is, well, odd

In China, GM is partnered with SAIC, and SAIC makes a Roewe 950, which is based on the LaCrosse. There is a PHEV version and a FCEV which is where the odd comes in.

"The fuel cell electric vehicle Roewe 950 fuel cell sedan with a range of 400 km went on display at the 2014 Beijing show, the powertrain consists of a battery and hydrogen fuel cell and can start at temperatures of –20℃ below zero.[7] The 1.4 litre petrol engine is rated at 152 horsepower along with a 76 horsepower electric motor, bringing total horsepower output to 228 horsepower.

It also carries a two speed automatic gearbox. Production commenced in April 2016. Available colours are known as dark black ink, star han silver, silver leaf gold and pearl white."

Does it actually have an ICE and a fuel cell? The footnote link is 404ed, so no help.

Only thing giving, not very helpful, details on the FCEV I found was this.
"Fuel cell car Roewe950 is the only one of its kind in China that has realized launch, sale and license approval. Its dual power source of batteries and fuel cells allows the vehicle to make use of pure electric, hybrid and brake energy recovery. A slow charging function with external power supply diversifies the power resources. This model has a maximum endurance of 430 kilometers and can be started even in a temperature of minus 20 C.'

Neat, it's a plug in, but that didn't clear up much else. Hybrid could refer to use of battery and fuel cell, or an ICE hybrid system. I'd say the first is more likely, but then the car can't fast charge, so a gasoline genset could be useful for outside the limited hydrogen network.

Perhaps @tochatihu or someone else behind the great firewall can dig up more.

 

400km NEDC is an EPA range around 175 miles. Which wouldn't be surprising for a BEV with a hydrogen range extender; tanks and batteries both need a good amount of space.

I had mistaken the PHEV for a BEV. Corrected in the OP. Found specifications for the PHEV, and it is looking like the Wikipedia article has an editing error with PHEV details in the FCEV section. SAIC's English statements aren't helping, "a double engine system" is referring to a battery and fuel cell here, SAIC MOTOR. So it seems the Roewe 950 fuel cell isn't weird, but just a plug in FCEV.

Found what fuel cell stack it uses, a PROME P240S by SHPT.
