I was all set to go get a Prius today under the strong lease incentives, but I think I'm going to wait. I drive a CRV and am pretty happy with it, but since I commute I sure would love to be getting better mileage! Five things concern me:

    1. I'm not sure where the dust is going to settle around all the hub-bub.
    2. I'm wondering what the hub-bub will do to insurance rates.
    3. Rear visibility.
    4. Switching from ample to not so ample cargo space for my lifestyle.
    5. It seems reasonable to expect just as, if not stronger, incentives for March.

I'm willing to hear thought on the matter. I'm certain the dealerships I've contacted would love to make a sale today.

I don't think it'd do anything to insurance rates.

Get the NAV (backup camera) to help with rear visibility. Removing the rear headrests will help also.

The CRV is a small SUV. I've never sat in one, but is it that much bigger than the Prius? Check out the thread where people have stuffed crazy amount of stuff in the Prius.

Gas prices are already beginning their spring dance, the best time to kick a dealer in the seat of the pants is in winter and at the end of the month. At the end of March you wil be at the front door of April and a possible improvement in Toyota's situation. They are definitely down on their haunches and bent over now. Better or worse next month roll the dice?

    I think so too.
In Europe, we do not have this opportunity because Europeans were more lenient towards TOYOTA.

If your concern is about rear visibility while driving forward, I actually see more of what's on behind me than in other cars I've had in my past. Backing up is a cinch too even without B/U camera

Thanks for your replies. One of the dealers said to wait until March 2. The incentives are ging to be stronger. It doesn't appear profoundly so, 15ish dollars less a month, but stronger nonetheless. Hmmmm.

Yeah, I heard rumors of a stronger incentive in March. It's just around the corner, so wait it out.

I currently drive an Acura TL Type-S 2007 and can't wait to start saving on gas... Yes, I'll miss the speed, but in this economy, it's all about saving. haha!

I think that the back visability is fine. I just use the left and right mirrors which are more important, and look at the blind spot when im turning. But then again i think i am a good driver. But people who are new drivers might not like the rear visibility

Perhaps the 2010 model will have a price dip when the 2011s become available. On the other hand, there could be an increased demand when supply of the 2010 dwindles. With so many uncertanities, it is next to impossible to know what will happen with the price of a car that has been so popular. It seems like you don't need to make a change right now anyway,so you might as well wait.

What model year is your Honda CRV? I happen to like the car, which to me appears to be a good crossover compromise SUV with reasonable gas mileage. I almost decided to buy one to replace the 2000 Jeep GC Laredo I had. But the Prius looked better long term .... gas prices 5 years from now will do that.

I have a 2008 EX. It makes my 3rd CRV, so I guess you can say I'm sold on them.:) That said, I tend to like to trade out every couple years and change up my driving experience. Couple that with my commute and the current/future incentives, and the Prius seems like a good next ride.

I've - surprisingly! - found the same to be true. Noticed this immediately after I got the car, since I thought it was going to be a problem. It isn't. Because of the rear window section below the spoiler, I can actually see more of what's behind the car than when I had sedans. (OTOH, the bottom section gets dirty *really* quickly & needs to be washed off fairly frequently.)

And although the spoiler does spoil the view (built-in pun) to some extent, I've also discovered that it often blocks the brightest part of the reflection of the headlights of the car behind me at night, mng. I don't need to flip the rear-view mirror to "dim" nearly as much as I normally would.

The CRV has stupid 'fold and tumble' rear seats which suck up about a foot of cargo room. Plus the load floor is nasty with hooks where the seats would anchor. Honda trying hard to be different. They could have just made fold flat seats. Not that I care that much about a CRV anyway.

You should see the Element rear seats that fold up against the rear-side windows to create massive blind spots ... true genious.

Thats a good idea. I bought a PIII on 31dec09 - for the tax break too. If you have been driving conventional cars, make sure you understand how different the Prius is, and what you can and cannot do by owning a Hybrid vs. a conventional car. For my wife of 55 years and I, we are still on the learning curve. Also I just read, on this chat, where an owner needed a new key - Toyota told him it would cost 640.00 for the keyless entry replacement. Don't know if the programming was extra or not.
I wanted to have the annoying backup and seatbelt beeps changed - the dealer wanted 50.00 to reprogram the computer to do this. I was lucky to have it done for nothing since I didnt have a delivery prep on New Years Eve.
This Hybrid concept is so different I think that I would rethink my purchase if I had to do it over again.
    Maybe it's our age's?:)

I was going to wait for the 2011 because I'd read that they were going to have a plug-into-the-wall-socket feature.

But then my daughter finished off one of our other cars, and thanks to the Toyota stories in the news I was able to get my Phase V model for a couple of thousand $$ less than two months ago...I went for it.

    Thanks for your honesty.

I was in the dealership just yesterday... test drove one.. loved it.. got a price quote for a II for about $23K (didn't even worry about that.. I knew I could get that number down) and was actually pretty excited about it.. but then I came home and my wife reminded me that with my PAID OFF Nissan Frontier.. I'm only spending about $45-$55 per month on gas, instead of $35.00 on gas and a NEW CAR NOTE OF $400.00 for the next five years! My Nissan is running just fine, it is about 6 or 7 years old with 65K miles.. think I'll stay with it for the time being...

Based on the number of retired Prius owners I meet, that's unlikely. It's probably more of a background difference.

Were the decades passed filled with the embracing of new technologies or a wait for it to become common first?

Things like the microwave, VCR, and answering machine did offer lifestyle improvements in the form of change that wasn't quickly embraced by all. Then there's the internet. How long did that take? Are you comfortable with it now?

We had a similar discussion but it was about a 9 year old, 2001 Echo, and our existing, 7 year old, 2003 Prius. Nothing wrong with the 9 year old, paid-off Echo and the new owner is getting great service. But now we have a 2010 Prius so if our 7 year old Prius has a major repair, we don't have to revert to the smaller, older, Echo.

So Bob, how is the '03 Prius running? It would seem that it is beyond it's "battery warranty" period.. so how is it holding up? One of my biggest concerns also is the "dead battery at 100K / 5 year mark".
