Wayne Gerdes knows how to wring a gas tank dry. He can squeeze 84 miles per gallon from your standard-issue Ford Ranger pick-up. He once averaged more than 100 mpg during the course of an entire summer. And while behind the wheel of a hybrid electric Honda Insight, he coaxed the vehicle into yielding an astonishing 180.1 mpg. Gerdes can do these seemingly impossible things with a car because he is one of a rare breed of drivers known as hypermilers.

I always thought cruise control was wasn't that important in terms of mpg. Now I have a hypermiler to back me up.

Having known Wayne G. for a couple of years now this is one of the best "general public" articles from/about him and hypermiling. But you don't want to know how he got 90 MPG average in a Classic Prius.

Wayne (FireE) is right and that exactly why I posted this one.
(and, perhaps, for the picture of that handsome presenter at Hybridfest)

Danny, in one of the paragraphs it clearly states that some of the techniques - when executed incorrectly - are downright dangerous and illegal. Some media folk dwell way too much on that stuff and paint Wayne G and all hypermilers as crazy, insane, illegal fanatics.

Nice looking civic wagon! Though I wonder if it inherited any design flaws such as rear seats that do not fold...

Hey regarding mpg competitions. Do they penalize for driving farther than the length of the course?

    Crazy? Illegal fanatics? Insane?
From the part of the article that caught my eye:

"Gerdes traded in his Honda Insight for an Accord, which he sleeps in some nights to reduce his driving to and from work."

So he spends the nites in the parking lot at work a few times a month or so ... you know ... to save three dollars and eighty five cents in gas. I wonder what his wife thinks about that. AHHHhahahahahahahaaa.

I would have to agree that sleeping in your car to reduce driving is a little too extreme if you ask me.
