    Hi F8L,

    Yea, Amory and RMI have a great idea there. It will be a while before they are making whole cars, but they have proved the process can do it. Thermoplastic composites work becasue the thermoplastics have improved so much in the last 20 years. They are using PEEK. Another plastic called Prima-Spire might also do well. Both of these are relatively high temperature plastics (300 F or greater softening temps). So, its no problem with them sitting out in the sun, even with black paint in Death Valley. Thermoplastic composites can be recycled, but I doubt the total process is there yet. This is unlike thermo-set composites, where recycling is a non-starter (ever try to melt epoxy circuit board ? ).

    A bigger problem is the cost of fiber. Although, the long-term durability of the vehicle chasis may make this cost economically viable. Just like a Prius brake life helps to make the hybrid system cost effective.

    I agree but my knowledge of thermoplastics is minimal. The basic idea seems good though. Especially how the end product can be broken back down into usable materials with little resource involvement. IE it doesn't require tons of energy or other chemicals.

    I have handled Amory's carbon fiber bowl - very light mass and strong. I ride a carbon fiber bicycle, a Trek, light, aerodynamic, responsive and strong. Detroit has one less excuse for achieving higher efficiency.
