TESLA MODEL S TOP LUXURY SEDAN

Sales of full-size luxury sedans in the U.S. market dropped dramatically last year. We’re talking about cars that cost in the $100,000 range. Maybe many of those car buyers went for a luxury SUV instead of a passenger car… or maybe they went for a Tesla Model S. Amazingly, the S is now the best selling luxury sedan, by far. And its sales were up 51% while all the other cars in that segment were down. No wonder luxury makers are worried about Tesla. It’s stealing some of the best buyers away from the best known brands.

    2015 Luxury Sedan Sales
    model sales %
    1 Tesla Model S 25202 +51.01%
    2 Mercedes S-Class 21934 -13.22%
    3 BMW 6 Series 8146 -5.79%
    4 BMW 7 Series 9292 -4.64%

Of course I had to add a comment, "But gas is so cheap, will they ever pay it off?"

A tesla model S is significantly cheaper than a lexus LSh, and the government says you save about $1000/yr in fuel ;-)

    Compare Side-by-Side

There is no summon feature on the LSh or the mercedes S class, and the cars are noticably slower. There is an amg version of the s class, but it isn't nearly as fast as the P version of the model S. If you want the latest gadgets, you have to buy the tesla. If you want some luxury features the S class is the way to go. What do you want tech and acceleration or atomized fragrance in the mercedes, or recling back seats in the lexus.

I haven't seen a newer 7-series around here in years. There used to be tons. Are they that bad now?

The BMW 7 series just went through a refresh cycle. Reviews said good. I see lots of prior 7 models being driven as off-rental purchases.

Interesting article on BMW's future in Fortune this issue. Relates to every car company as cars are banned in city centers, kids don't place priority on owning a car, comments on total investment in cars in the world, how infrequently they are used, etc.

Color me stupid, but if I'm going to spend $100,000+ for a car...I could care less MPG, MPGe, miles per tank, miles per charge...or any other pretentious figure.

Let me guess, you would never in your life spend $70K on a tesla or a lexus or a beemer, or a mercedes, so your opinion doesn't matter.
Lots of people bought prii when they had the money for a tesla. They didn't want to conspicuoulsly consume oil. Guess what. Now those folks and others are buying tesla's because by many measures they are the best sports sedans.

Didn't say I wouldn't buy, just wouldn't be to be pretentious about efficiency.

Have you ever bought a car that expensive. From your post you seemed to think people that would would not care about efficiency. Sales numbers pretty much say when they can have it all acceleration, luxury, effiecency, tech people in the sports sedan market will pay. We will soon see if that is true in the luxury crossover market.

I think you don't get it. You want that kind of car. You pick the one that uses the least oil and has the highest tech. Both good things. Lots of rich people bought prii to burn the least oil.

Of course, as I saiid you aren't in the group, so you are thinking which of the luxury sport sedans you'd buy over the tesla, and why?

That's why they sold the few Lexus LSh and active hybrid 7s, but tesla is in a whole other ball park. Oh and a tesla is faster and less expensive than those 20mpg hybrids.
