Will be interesting to see how other carmakers respond to this. And considering Tesla's patents are now open source, they could end up using the same parts, which will also help boost production in Tesla's Gigafactory.

I think I might start saving up for a Model 3 now...

All for the bargain basement price of $200000, wow I can't wait! Also thanks to the government of Nevada for helping keep the price low.

    Spreading FUD is not appreciated.
The tip-top high performance model runs $120k, not $200k.
Considering super cars that get that type of acceleration tend to run 300k to a couple million even that high price is a relative bargain.
The AWD versons of the 60 & 85 cost an extra $4000. They also improve both range and performance.

I think they could ask more if they wanted, production line would still run at full speed.

I'm looking for a version to be 'loaned' to TopGear . . . only include a remote control. If the TopGear team attempts to push it . . . ZOOM! ZOOM! and circle back!

I can see the license plate that Tesla will put on it for them: "4QTG".

Considering the other announcement, that may not need a remote to be done.

For all but a very few, the difference between a $120k car and a $200k car is insignificant, they are both unaffordable.

I remember when someone I knew first drove a car that cost more than my mortgage. Never made much economic sense to me.

I love to read about the technology, but ...

For the rich this is great. The proof is in the pudding when he gives the rest of us a practical affordable vehicle. Fingers crossed.

2018 will be that date, well if the bmw 3 series is affordable. The model 3 won't be prius priced.
The tesla S goes from $70K-$120K, when you consider many places with $10K tax credits that hits the top 10%.

Now this top of line vehicle sure its for the top 1%, as is the bmw i8. BMW is already advertising they are using some of the i8 tech in the 3 series (their high volume vehicle), I would expect this D to make it into the tesla model 3 for around $3K, not much different than the solar roof in the prius, but probably more practicle.

While I love what Musk is doing, they are all still just toys for the rich...even at BMW 3 Series prices.

It doesn't bother me. There are many performance "flagships" that cost a bunch of coin from exotic sports cars to heavy-hauling trucks to off road monsters. Their forays into the limits of performance allows us to eventually get the goods in our more pedestrian rides.

Why such derision? All new tech starts out as "toys for the rich".
It isn't as if BMWs, Audis and Mercedes emit no greenhouse gases. If Tesla can replace those high end cars, more power to them.

To be able to make an economy electric car you need economy of scale. You have to be able to produce and sell 100s of thousands. Tesla doesn't have that scale yet.
If you want a cheaper EV, you need to look at the larger companies such as Nissan, GM and Toyota.

Looks like Tesla beat out everyone else on delivering a semi autonomous vehicle. If I can afford it, I wouldn't be buying it for the speed. I'd be buying it for the self driving feature.

Well I suppose one might finance a Tesla Model S - D by doing 'pinks.'
