TERK Toyota XM interface $99

    TERK/Audiovox has finally started shipping their after-market XM interface for toyota cars. The official compatibility chart is below.

    strange that the Solara, Camry and Camry hybrid are listed, but not the Prius. I've gone ahead and ordered one anyways. Hope it works. If anyone has any advice let me know.

    I finally got this installed today and everything works... almost. The unit does have the 10 character limitation but for $99 I guess I can't complain too much.

    The package included the following
    1 XMD1000 receiver and antenna (retail packaging)
    1 XMDTL100 interface unit
    1 OEM Stereo interface cable with passthrough (plugs into my JBL stereo and the XMDTL100)
    1 set of rca cables for the audio between the XMD1000 and XMDTL100
    1 power /comm cable. connects between XMD1000 and XMDTL100

    I was able to fit the XMD1000 receiver directly behind the stereo with a bit of room to spare. The interface unit fits behind the plastic panel directly beneath the stereo. I haven't decided where to put the antenna yet, so it's sitting on passenger side of the dash for now.

    Do you need to have the JBL radio or will it install with just the standard AM FM CD that's in my 2005?

    Hey, momanz, thanks for stepping out on faith and trying this, despite it not being listed for the Prius. I've wanted an integrated XM unit since I bought the car, but couldn't justify the usual cost. I'll have to seriously consider this option.

    Can I assume they included installation instructions? Were they adequate? How difficult was the install?

    Your radio has to be satellite ready. I think most compatible radios have the AM/SAT button on them. Also, if you look in the back of the radio there will be a vacant 12 pin connector that's used for connecting audio accessories.

    They do include instructions, but your best bet is to look at the guides that people have posted online since the TERK instructions are really generic. Once you plug in the interface to the radio that's it. The challenge will be getting everything permanently attached. It took me 30min to get everything plugged in and temporarily placed out of view. I've been on several trips without seeing any problems so I'm going to permanently attach all the components this long weekend. I'll post pictures and update when I'm done.

    Here are the picts. I decided to remove the radio so it would be a bit easier work with. The XMD1000 is held in place using cable ties.

    The interface unit actually fits quite snugly in the spot shown so I haven't done anything special to attach it. Removing that lower panel is simple so if it starts to rattle getting to it will not be a problem.

    I'm still working on where to place the antenna. I saw a post about placing it in the spoiler which I may try. On the other hand I may take the easy way out and leave it on the dash.

    Thanks for the Pics. I have the Vais SLX, which uses the same XMDirect Box. The Antenna cable is so long that I was able to run it along the passenger side so it is behind the FM antenna.

    I wonder why it is only 10 Characters. I have 16 with mine, so it isn't a limitation of the Radio or XMDirect box. It is a limitation of the interface box.

    That's what I figured. I have an XM Direct box in my integra carputer and it gives me 16 characters there too. I'm planning on putting together another carputer for the prius, and when that happens I'll pipe the XMD box through the carputer and sell the interface unit.

    Did you remove the headliner on your antenna install? Any problems with water leaking at the point where the antenna wire exits the car?

    I ran the wire over the glove compartment, down the passenger side and along the bottom of the door. This is the same way that the cable for the factory XM is installed.

    I have no problem with water leaking in.

    My first post

    What about the quality of the XM interface I have a Roadie 2 but I want to do the XM without the visable cables, and have the onscreen interface.

    How does everyone like the TERK option?

    I had the Coastal "Factory" XM radio before the Vais SLX/XMDirect. The sound quality with the XMDirect is certainly as good as the factory XM and the reception is better with a smaller antenna.

    I installed the TERK XM and could not be happier. I had room under the multi-function 'hood' to put all the hardware and the antenna. (no speaker in the way for me without the JPL)

    The instructions I found at link made the job easy. I’m actually looking forward to digging into the dash again to do more mods now that I know how easy it it.

    The integrated XM is much better to control while driving in traffic and not having the antenna on the dash – priceless! Or at least well worth the $99.00!

    Can you tell me where you got this and is this $99 kit all that is needed to get XM radio in the Prius, other than an XM subscription?

    Oh and is there any reason why the CoastalETech version is preferrable to the Terk version, except perhaps that it comes with free activation, 3 months service, and a $55 XM gift card?

    If you look hard enough you can usually find an XM promo code online that will give you 3 months service and free activation. There may be better ones out there too. :)

    The TERK is running like a champ. The 10 character thing is a non-issue for me. I rarely find myself on the title/artist display.

    I agree, the limit is only an issue for me when I'm listening to the oldtime radio shows and I don't see the 'whole' name.

    An update to my install - I had to move the antenna to further out on the dash and to do this I just ran the cable through the punch out on the drivers’ side near the base of the windshield. The antenna is now on the flat area just to the left of the vent opening and this works great. B)

    I had to move the antenna as part of my commute faced the car in an orientation that blocked the satellite from the antenna… The new position is good until I drive under a freeway overpass.

    Thanks for the tip. I got the Terk and used the Promo code you posted. It worked and I got free activation and 3 months free. XM is in and running!
