R.L. Polk & Co., a marketing firm that collects and interprets automotive data, recently listed the top ten states with the most registrations of hybrid vehicles for 2005. The states, registrations, and percentage, are:

    Florida 10,470 5.3 percent
    Texas 9,632 4.8 percent
    New York 9,372 4.7 percent
    Virginia 8,650 4.3 percent
    Illinois 7,286 3.7 percent
    Washington 6,970 3.5 percent
    Pennsylvania 6,948 3.5 percent

Not sure what these stats mean. Adding up the "percent" figures doesn't equal 100%, so they aren't saying that California has 26.4 percent of the total, national hybrid registrations for the year (or are they, and the remaining 40 states comprise 38% of the hybrids sold? That seems unlikely).

Is it saying that 26.4 percent of the car registrations within California were for hybrids? That seems high to me also ... I do know that the 10th most popular car registered in my county was the Prius, and its the only hybrid that appeared in that listing (but the paper didn't give the number of cars registered, just the ranking, so we have no way of knowing how close number 10 was to number 9).

Gas prices are generally higher here than elsewhere (unless there's a huricane in the gulf!) And Californians do love the environment. So I'm not that surprised to see such high numbers for the country's most populous state.

You said 26.4% of all the Hybrid were registered to CA, then only 199,314 new cars are sold in CA... Did I miss something? 26.4% is the total number of oporational Prius registered in CA for 2005.

Remember, there are some CA Prius sold to out of state customers. So there are really more Prius sold in CA than registered.

In the part of the wood, there are so many Prius around that is not special anymore. I think I run out of fingers to keep track of counting every morning with just a 6 miles commute.

And in California , the Carpool sticker REALLY made many people buy them who would not have otherwise. So what happens when the sticker expires in 1/1/2008? Do people go back to their gas guzzlers?

"California continues to lead the way for hybrids with 52,619 new hybrid vehicle registrations in 2005, up from 25,021 in 2004. California accounts for 26.4 percent of the nation's share for new hybrid units (Table 1). "

"Supporting California's regional leadership in this category, four of the country's top 10 hybrid markets were from this state (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento). Los Angeles still remains the top metropolitan area for hybrid vehicles with 11.5 percent of all U.S. registrations in 2005 (Table 2)."

In 2005 calendar year- "Los Angeles 22,922 11.5%"

And yes it seems like every "Tom, Dick and Jane" has a Prius, to me...I see tons of women drivers...

I wonder where in Texas they are driving them, because I'm in Dallas and NEVER see any one the road...about 1 Prius per week.

Maybe a function of the time of day? Commuting in north Dalllas I'm up to seeing 2 or 3 each weekday.

too bad they dont do a per capita list. im sure Wa state would be the highest after VA but only because Wa does not give HOV exceptions and im fairly certain that the figures published dont consider state fleet vehicles because the various governments here have a LOT of Priuses.

<_< I remember a quote from "George Jessel" (The "Toastmaster General" of the USA) some years back:

"Statistics are like a Bikini bathing suit - What they REVEAL is fascinating, but what they CONCEAL is VITAL!"

Another definition: "There are three kinds of lies: White Lies, Black Lies and Statistics."

So, the "top ten" Prius-occupied states added to 123.680 Prii, leaving about 75,300 in the other 40 states combined.

Using 2003 state populations and drawing a relationship between % of Hybrids and % of population, based on my crude calculations, the top 10 in terms of per capita Hybrid ownership works out to be:

    CA
    TX
    NY
    FL
    IL
    PA
    MA
    VA
    WA
    MD

Please don't ask for my backup.......
