We used to own the prior generation Prius, and traded it in for a Kia Niro HEV for various reasons. After a year of ownership, I’ve come to the conclusion that I dislike the Niro other than the styling.

And therefore am considering getting the new Prius. But there was one thing about the Niro that for our usage case has proven to be very convenient, and I’m wondering if there is something equivalent with the Prius.

Specifically, on the Niro, while in drive (as opposed to reverse) there is a button in the center console to switch the infotainment screen to the backup camera view. We live in a high rise condo with underground parking, and after we enter the garage we have to wait for it to close completely after pulling in before continuing into the garage, so no interlopers get in (joys of living in an urban environment). Being able to simply press a button on the center console to bring up the rear view camera has proven extremely convenient… to the point that my wife has said this is her favorite feature on the Niro.

Does the new Prius have any equivalent button to easily switch the center screen to the backup or 360 camera? I know I could simply switch to reverse to call up the screen, of course, but am wondering if there is a button to do this while in drive. A little minor thing I realize, but am curious.

Yes (360 camera) - and you can change it to a setting so it switches automatically when driving slowly

that’s good to know. Is there a button to switch between the camera and the regular display?

I cant upload a screenshot right now (probably issue of the forum migration) - but the button is right side behind the steering wheel together with the automatic parking feature. Im talking only about the 360 camera though.

Thanks again for the info. The manual doesn’t seem to provide a lot of info regarding this feature. When you put the car in reverse, does the 360 camera engage, too?

I’ve had a couple of cars with 360 cameras, and they both basically operated in lieu of the reverse only camera in this way.

In any case, next up for me is to rent a Prius. Thankfully there’s one available on Turo where I live. I find the cost to rent a car for a week to put it through its paces in my usual driving well worth it. (If I had done that with the Niro probably wouldn’t have gotten it.)

If you get the Premium Package (aka Advanced Technology) package you get the digital rearview mirror. It goes to the backup camera when you flip the lever on the mirror that's usually for reducing glare from high-beams on the car behind you. It stays on until you flip it back to normal view. Very handy when you have stuff in the cargo that blocks the rear window. But that's and add-on only available on the high end trims (Limited and XSE Premium).

I have the Limited with the Advanced package. The Advanced P ark feature was what I really wanted with the package, but find that I'm using the digital rearview all the time. It provides a wider field of view and much better visibility at night. Some people don't like the depth of field change when you go from normal view to digital view, but I haven't found it to be an issue at all.

Yes, it has a split screen with reverse and topdown view.

Yeah the rear view mirror is another good point. Short correction though:The digital rear view mirror does not go to the backup/360 camera, it has its own camera. Thats why the car has two cameras next to each other in the back. A little bit ugly but its not a luxury car after all.

Thanks all for the feedback! Forgot about the digital rear view camera mirror. Thought it was interesting that Toyota added this to the Prius. I’ve never driven a car with such a mirror. Been in an Uber once that had one (Escalade I think), and when I commented to the driver about it, he switched it on and off a few times so I could see the difference.

My 2013 Prius is too old to have a built-in rear view camera mirror, although I do have a have a reversing camera (without the guide lines). So, I added my own, a Toguard CE80B unit which straps on to the original mirror and includes a front dash cam, with a separate rear camera wired back to it. It can display both front and rear views together or separately and can easily be switched using voice commands. I've found it to be a worthwhile addition to the car.
