Hello all, My '09 is closing in on 195k and is in need of a facelift... or rather undercarriage lift. While I'm going through the work of replacing the struts I might as well do anything else the car could use with the wheels off. This car goes camping and tows quite a bit so one part I'm keen on is the HD lift kit from Prius Offroad. Other forum members have also written good things on the suspension kit from RockAuto and the KYB parts. Here's where I need the input of those more knowledgeable: -Since I'm replacing the springs it seems like KYB is the way to go. Is that true? If so, what parts do I need? -Sway bars are to be replaced. What would be the advantage in changing to an even beefier sway bar like this one? -End links, which ones to go with? -Wheel hubs? -Anything else? The brakes were replaced recently so that's the only thing the car doesn't need. The work will be performed by a good friend who runs a Toyota repair shop and myself as sous chef. The main goals are parts that will last, and improved handling for a daily driver which occasionally goes on weekend adventures. Thank you in advance for the assistance!
I'm adding 40 mm spacers all the way around a new struts I don't know maybe this next week that should be here any minute nothing fancy Just picking up the car a little bit about 1.6 in better easy to getting in and out things like that nothing too serious got some variable rate springs I might put them on all at the same time see how it goes it'll go pretty quickly I'm just wondering if the variable rate springs will be a thing.
Generally as you lift a vehicle up handling doesn't get tighter and nicer generally gets a little more sloppy I think lifted trucks of course we're not going a foot I do realize that but on your way up is generally not the way most folks are trying to go except for lifted trucks and people that want to go play in the bushes generally that's going to slow you down more than anything else You get long stalks of weeds and stuff flying up into your chassis that can rip plastics and stuff right off hence the fancy $300 metal shield that somebody has fabbed up Prius off-road whoever I mean you're adding weight to the vehicle and things like that where I'm usually doing the opposite taking the weight off I don't carry a spare etc and most of my small cars I haven't had a flat in 20 years My wife has one every other week It's got to be something to do with the type of people driving the vehicle I swear it must have. Remember you're spacing the car upwards on top of the strut plate so you're just raising the chassis the distance for your end links to your sway bar and all that should not change everything is below that stays the same length would a bigger sway bar benefit you camping and off-road I kind of doubt it and then will it help you when you're almost 2 in higher off the ground going down the interstate I don't know but you have 1.2 in of more air volume sliding under the car very easily You just gave her the big old hole. So I guess front dam and/or spoiler might be good for the street but that will help you not at all on the trail It's a compromise no matter how you do it you got to get from the trail back to reality at least some of the time or then you have a purpose built vehicle for your trails and hoo haas . And a vehicle you drive to work and do real things in when it's time to do those things. I'm looking at this mostly for ease of egress or getting in and out of the car My Prius at the factory ride height does quite good on most trails and fence lines and where I go Not really had any off-road problems of course we're not looking for the problems either we're not trying to go mudding or a rock climbing or any of that.
