I haven't seen a StC thread in a few years. I can start one, only I can't judge responses because I actually don't know the answer. :)

I was looking upwards under the rear of my 2010. Hard to see in the space between the left rear wheel well and the bumper, concealed from below by the aero under cover ... but when I looked up through the cutout in the under cover where the tiedown bracket would come through ... I saw what looked like a small tank. It had a hose or two attached. That's sort of in the neighborhood of the fuel filler so I figured it might be the canister or something, but no, the canister/pump assembly is mounted right next to the fuel tank. This thing is something different.

I didn't remember seeing anything like it in parts of the repair manual I had skimmed. I haven't been able to find anything like it in a few online dealer parts diagrams ... but maybe just because I don't know what to call it or where to look.

Taking a second look at the New Car Features Manual, sure enough, it is there ... with no label and no description of what it's for. :)

Could it be a reservoir for brake fluid?

It's the E46 perpetual motion sensor for the emodium high torque eridium modulator. Can only be replaced by a certified mechanic specializing in high density mass repair.

The lines from it look to be going to the charcoal canister. I looked a bit through the repair manual, no luck.

Some sorta air reservoir, up high enuf to be above gasoline?

That's a peninsula off the coast of Florida.
Everything in a diagram I can't identify is a peninsula off the coast of Florida.

I remember seeing something like that once. I think it was when I was a kid, and I was about to get beat up by the neighborhood bully. Right before I was struck, I think he was holding something like that in his hand..................

Nerp ... sender is inside the tank with the fuel pump.

Obviously part of the fuel system, since it's shown on that diagram, but ... ?

I wonder if this will go unsolved until somebody who has the rear bumper off for any reason notices if that thing has a part number on it, and what that number comes up as online....

Almost certainly must be inspected every 10,000 (miles or km, your choice) for 299.95 (dollars or Euros, your choice), only by a certified mechanic with experience in analysis of premium bullshitem.

A solid guess ... though your diagram here shows the filter right close to the fuel filler mouth, and I think that was where other diagrams I had looked at were showing it, too. I think the filter is the *4 in the diagram I posted (by memory ... I cropped the legend out of the screenshot).

What you have here is a two part assembly consisting of the following items. Fretetisat and Kanuten Valve. This device circulates coolant thru the high speed door handles when the vehicle reaches speeds greater than 60 mph. This is to prevent the door handles from heating due to air friction, causing them to warp slightly and impact the aerodynamics of the car.

I wouldn't use these diagrams to determine actual locations. They aren't isometric drawings.

The Kanuten Valve. There's something very Canadian about that part.
