I'm not talking about anything crazy.... That would be my truck. (14 speakers, and about 2000 wts) But is there some way I could add just a little power and maybe 1 little 8" sub woofer ? I mean, how tough would it be (what problems might I run into) trying to add just a lightweight little 5 ch. amp to run the stock speakers and a little sub woofer ? I'm not going for "loud".... I'm just going for full, and clean. To be honest, the stock system sounds pretty decent, just no bottom end. So at the very least, how about a simple little bazooka tube or something like it ?
I'm not sure I understand the question. What do you believe is preventing you from adding an amp and a small sub to your cer?
Not sure if it was for an older Prius, but I read that one shouldn't put more than a 30 amp draw on the 12 volt system of a Prius ? I'm drawing like 90 amps in my truck, but again, I'm not trying for that kind of system in my Prius. Just a little louder, fuller system with some decent bass.
I too would like fuller sound in my 17 Prius. I would prefer not to replace the head unit, but I would like the system to sound better. If there is something I can add that will give it fuller sound, I’m all for that. I replaced the head unit on a few cars a few years back, and I’ve had my car broken into twice to steal the stereo. Nobody breaks into a car to steal a factory head unit, so now I don’t upgrade them. mid be in favor of replacing the speakers though, if that helped.
IMPO, back in the day of cassette tapes, a better deck made a big difference. But when the source is digital, it's all very clean to begin with. I think good solid power makes a bigger difference than anything else. A decent, solid 5 channel amp to power all of your speakers, with a nice solid mono channel for a small subwoofer (in the correct enclosure) , set up correctly, should sound really good.
Prius DC/DC converter (think of it as your alternator) is good for around 100 amps. Car only needs a few for itself. Just make sure you tap into the load side of the shunt at the battery, so the car notices and appropriately reacts to the extra draw. Party on! Stock speakers are incredigarbage. I’ve seen bigger magnets on earbuds.
But about those super light little speakers.... I bet they are really efficient... So they can get by with a smaller amplifier, to push them. I bet if I gave them 50 or 60 wts of good clean power, and didn't push them too hard, they sound really good.... Until they blew lol And only then would I worry about replacing them with some good speakers. Less than 100 amps sounds totally sufficient for what I'm shooting for. Think I'll start looking for a nice little all in one 5 ch amp.... Thank you Leadfoot.
I just installed an NVX 8” self power sub, its flat enough to slide under the driver’s seat . It has dramatically improved the sound, allows me to turn the bass on the head unit down improving the high end clarity while the sub provides the punch. I used the output from the right front dash speaker for the sub.
I have a little over 2k in my 2016 sound system. Pioneer top of the line component speakers in the front and back doors. Two 12 inch p2 in sub box. Then put it all together with an alpine V9 5 channel amp along with audio control LCi7. Car has had it in it for about 6 months. No problems so far.
