    I saw this on my way home from work today. There was someone else behind me in Tesla's new SUV. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of that :/ Image1465679995.484346.jpg

    P90d is their way of making awd. With front and rear motors separate instead of using driveshafts

    P90D breaks down like this:

    P: Performance (as in, this is higher performance than a regular model - I'll get to that)
    90: 90 kWh battery
    D: Dual motor AWD

    The 90D is rated at 417 hp battery-limited from the dual 259 hp motors (so if you lose traction on one axle, it can send up to 259 hp to the other axle while reducing power to the slipping axle).

    Conversely, the P90D in Ludicrous mode (note that older P90Ds didn't have Ludicrous, they had Insane, and a lower total power output, but this was before Tesla reported total system horsepower properly, so they were often claimed as being 691 hp, due to simply adding the powers together) is rated at 532 hp battery-limited from the 503 hp rear motor and 259 hp front motor. In normal mode, it's rated at 463 hp (but that's a software power reduction).

    When I retire in a couple of years, and move on from my Leaf, I am seriously considering the Model 3. Proper range, decent price, but, $66k for a S, I may talk myself up a level! And when I buy in 2018, who knows what will be available, and at what price!
    I am still open to all options!

    Don't forget about the Ludicrous badge, the underline P90D.

    and one thing left off post #9 . . . for those of us with limited addition skills (I have my trusty calculator ;) ) and didn't catch it . . . . when you add the two motor's hp together, you have well north of 700 ludicrous horse power. make certain your passenger's Pepsi has a lid on it. I remember when everyone under the sun making cars - how they seem to have a 'Limited' model, or a Limited Edition or whatever. Not too limited. But in the case of the 'P' . . . it really is for performance

    But adding those numbers together is not an accurate representation of the vehicle's horsepower, as the battery cannot supply full power to both motors.

    agreed - to the extent that when traction packs are insufficiently charged, the hp drops.... yet reading from many of the gearhead websites regarding the 'P' ;

    2016 Tesla Model S P90D Destroys Supercars
    Still - some web sights do show lower HP numbers ... while yet another site suggests the hp rating is being jacked up even higher (extra 50hp) on new models - either due to extra robust contactors ore due to new S's getting shipped with software limited 100kWh packs.
    Tesla is secretly adding over 50 hp to the Model S P90D Ludicrous based on 3rd party testing, what does it mean? | Electrek
    Time will tell ~

    Keep in mind that there's both the P90D and the P90D (as well as a P85D and a P85D), and the underlined models have upgraded interconnects to the battery to enable increased current. (IIRC it's an inconel fuse, that is blown by a microcontroller monitoring and firing an explosive bolt through the fuse, rather than the typical method of blowing a fuse.)
