My 02 has set codes for the speed sensors c5171 & c1572. Hard to believe that both sensors have gone bad at once. Any ideas for shortcuts on what to check?

I'm a little confused here, because my '01 book does not seem to even have C1571 and C1572 codes, but it does have C1271 and C1272 codes that refer to low output voltage of right and left (respectively) front speed sensors. Maybe the code prefix changed between '01 and '02? It surprises me.

But the '01, C127x codes, anyway, are not codes that would be set in normal operation. They are only set in the course of a Sensor Signal Check, which is a special dance that you have to start with either a jumper or a command from Techstream, then follow a specific sequence of foot off brake, foot on brake, then drive > 28 mph straight ahead until a light stops blinking. (Details of the procedure are in the manual.)

If anybody ever started the Sensor Signal Check inadvertently, or out of curiosity, without then following the prescribed driving sequence, it would be natural for those codes to be set (since the car would be thinking "hey, I'm supposed to be moving > 28 mph now, but the signals don't show it!"). So it could be that if you just clear them, or clear them and re-do a Sensor Signal Check with the published procedure, they might not come back, and things are fine.

Thanks, Chap. that helps a lot. I think you're right about the C code number and I may have mistyped it. I'll check it today.

At the same time, I set the code for the coolant pump, This car is due for a new one, second replacement in its lifetime at 205,000 miles. The car has been back burner'd as other projects are keeping me busy.

You're a valuable resource, I appreciate you taking the time.
