Remember the old days?...............We changed our spark plugs about two times a year and that was if you only drove about 10-15 thousand miles a year, plus replaced points, condenser, rotor, cap and wires also were changed. So if it takes a little extra work to change plugs at 120,000 miles. Oh well...........I can live with it.
I agree with buying a new car before changing plugs anyway! :)

I went through the procedure, to have a look at them. It is a royal pain. Our previous Civic Hybrid was almost as bad, but the wiper motors didn't need to come out.

It really isn't that bad to take off the wiper tray and wiper motor. I've done it at least twice. If you search on HAWAIIANBUILT's thread, there's a good description of the steps when he installed his Tanabe strut tower bar.

The reason for all this removal is an extension tube reaching down into the spark plug well. When you pull it up, it bumps into the underside of the windshield cowl one-or-two inches short of being able to be extracted. Therefore the need to tear out everything in that zone. Very frustrating, poor design decision.

Vehicle manufacturer today make no effort to accommodate owners who keep their vehicles beyond perhaps 150,000 miles. On some vehicles replacing timing chain guides requires engine removal, valve adjustment requires camshaft removal, and spark plug replacement is often very time consuming.

    Haha...

Comrades, Changing Spark Plugs is not that bad, you just have to pull half of the car apart!!!

At least its not a Mercedes, those things cost over 1k at the dealer to get the spark plugs replaced!!!

Is it possible to remove the plugs without having to take apart the wiper system?

Not on a Generation 3 Prius.
It's not that hard. About a 10-15 minute job...

LoL, apparently you folks has never worked on a BMW mini. The entire front end needs to be removed, before you can get to anything - Break out the blow-torch :D:p:whistle:; lots of plastic and clips that break. You have to sell it before getting to 100K miles; otherwise your bank account will go negative and the bill collectors will be banging on your door. :ROFLMAO::LOL::eek::cool:.
And don't get me started on the new Beemers without engine oil dip sticks

Opps, never-mind - 10 year old zombie thread.......

It is if you have a Gen 3 built for one of the regions where people drive on the left. That version has different wipers and cowl that don't get in the way of the spark igniter removal.

Here in the US, no such luck. The saving grace is, the wipers and cowl have to come out for so many kinds of job on the car that it gets pretty much like "chop ½ onion" at the start of recipes. You eventually sort of don't notice the time it takes.

Very simple and easy to remove all that.
Like chapman said, it is like cutting onions.

After doing it so many times, I have made a tool kit with the right tools just for the prius.

That way I am not looking around my other tool box for the sizes and ratchet combos.

So if I had a random ignition coil go out during a drive, I can easily do all that.

Then I would find the nearest Autozone and swap it out since the ones I have come with a lifetime warranty.

Impact driver. Takes me five minutes to remove the wiper arms and cowl. I timed it once. (I confess that I've done it scores of times and the first time must have been more like 10 minutes. :D)

Erm...... Yes.... You can do it by removing the wiper scuttle tray or you can just take off plastic cover remove coil packs and pull the plugs out using a couple of knuckles on a rachet... I'm not saying it's the correct method.. But it's A method... 5 minute job.
