When I bought my 2006, I accidentally sent in two applications for CA HOV stickers. I assumed they would disregard the second app, but to my surprise, I received two sets of HOV stickers. I guess I should return the second set to the DMV for reuse, unless anyone can think what else I could use them for. Email me at [email protected] if you have any ideas.

Are the stickers the same numbers as each other? I would just call them to see what should be done.

Btw, nice Name :p You imposter! ;)

How does one "accidentally sent in two applications for CA HOV stickers"?

HomerSimpson 315 asked about what to do after accidentally having 2 sets of stickers (full quote below)

Probably the only legal thing to do is to return one set to the DMV. The stickers are tied to the VIN
of the vehicle that was on the forms you submitted. The state may notice it themselves (2 HOV stickers
tied to the same VIN), if they do any form of audit/cross check at the end of the program.

With a limited number of HOV stickers and the confusion over whether (per the DMV) the plates must be attached to the car, I also sent in 2 applications. One when I first purchased the car (without plates) and later when I received the license number (not plates). Both checks were cashed in Dec 06, leaving me to believe that I would also receive two sets of stickers. I started thinking about what to do with the 2nd set (sell on e-bay, put on wife's car....). I didn't receive the 2nd set and wrote to the DMV for a refund of $8 which they processed.

Something to think about - assume you sell or give away the 2nd set of stickers and that person receives a ticket? Or the buyer contacts the DMV pointing out a mixup and transfers the sticker to their vehicle. In either case, you (your stickers) could be an issue.

I wouldn't risk it, though it is fun to think about!

Both sets should be tied to your VIN. You can double check by looking at the card that they came with. If so, I'd just keep the 2nd set as an extra in the event you get into an accident and need replacements.

You can't legally sell them to another person w/o selling your car too because of the above tie.

I had to apply for (and received) replacements after someone hit my car and my rear bumper cover had to be replaced. The number on the 3 rears doesn't match w/the front now so I carry both cards.

The stickers are tied to a VIN and a licence plate number. There is a certificate you get from DMV showing all three that you are supposed to surrender to the cop when he asks for it with your registration. Having a set of stickers that "doesn't match" is useless but make sure that you have the correct certificate listing all the stuff that does match. If you don't, call Liz at DMV (stf) and tell her and she'll take care of having it sent to you.
