If you could play one song to showcase your "Premium JBL Sound System" in your Gen III Prius what would it be?

    For me:
    Song: The Embrace
    Album: Kiss My Axe
    Artist: Al DiMeola

Anything really...it is a really good sound system. But, i would avoid heavy bass songs, such as "Grenade" because it brings the rattles out! :D Otherwise, any Pop songs work great.

My current JBL settings are: Treble 0, Mid +1, Bass 0, ASL ON. Fader and Balance 0.

    Yep, bass rattle !

Try Pat Benatar, Love is a Battlefield. Avoid post-90's Madonna.

For max bass rattle, try I'm Blue - Eiffel 65. Get installed an additional subwoofer, 10in or better. Will make you want to use foam injection inside of all the plastic covers.

    But I jest...nope I'm serious.

Consider a subwoofer under the driver's seat instead of in the back. You'll get the bass feel with less rattle, and be able to control the sub's volume easily.

I used to use a lot of Sheffield Labs CDs, Pat Coil and James Newton Howard for demoing systems. This is kind of hard to find but James Newton Howard and Friends from Sheffield Labs have some great tracks for demoing systems I especially like Amuseum. You gotta listen to it to appreciate it.

there a lot of songs to test any audio equipment. for example i use the following tracks:

    1. friend´n fellow (covered) - light my fire
    2. kraftwerk (minimum-maximum, live album) - aero dynamik and elektro
    kardiogram
    3. aural float (freefloat) - zwei g (with a very strong bassline)
    4. diana krall (live in paris) - devil may care

it could be a endless list...

Classic Beatles albums like Revolver and Rubber Soul sounded good on my JBL system. Lots of separation when you're parked.

    Some of my old favorites:
Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
    Dave Matthews Band - Crash
Anything released by Telarc Digital or Sheffield Sound Labs
Focal (JMLab) Demo Discs (7 that I know of)
lots of others not springing to mind....

I'd have to go with John Cage's 4'33".

It's something that's best enjoyed in a hybrid; a lot of the subtleties are lost in other cars.

Love Al DiMeola. Have seen him twice at the Orange Blossom in the last two years, (seats about 70 people), and also having breakfast at the local Holiday Inn the day after the concert a couple of weeks ago.

As an old vinyl junkie, no Sheffield Labs CDs for me. Try "What is Hip" at full tilt boogie! :D

I have the James Newton Howard CD! I love Amuseum but I completely forgot about it. Gotta go find it and load it in the Prius. I also remember that Mannheim Seamroller's Fresh Aire discs were great for testing stereos.

Yeah, like Saint-Saens Organ Symphony #3. I might add that I blew out a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10's with the Telarc 1812 Overture on 4th of July.

    Also the OPUS3 test CDs.
I've also liked Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Broadcasting From Home"
as a torture test for systems.
The best, however, was never produced on CD (at least not from original master tapes): Rick Wakeman's "White Rock", sound track to the '77 Winter Olympics.
I'd blown up more than my share of "bullet-proof" bass drivers at many audio salons back in the 70's. The title track has flowing 16/32 hz bass synth lines at VERY high amplitude.
I once saw 1" of cone excursion out of a pair of Infinity speakers.
Sadly, the cone was only designed for 1/2"
    Good times.....:)

Looks like White Rock is available as an import on Amazon.com for about 200 bucks. I have Six Wives of Henry VIII but it's not a great recording.
Two songs with low bass pedals:
Firth of Fifth, Genesis, Selling England by the Pound
At the End of the Day, Spock's Beard, V. I was listening to this the other day in my Prius. The JBL got down there pretty good. No rattle at those frequencies.

Telarc has some pretty good CDs. There's one in particular called Spies: Music of Espionage. It has great reviews on Amazon. Even the guy who gave it 2 stars because he bought the wrong CD said "The sound quality is truly amazing though." All the tracks are excellent for demoing systems but the track that I really love is Orient Express. My original copy is scratched up, time to make a few copies for backups.
Drum & track from Sheffield Labs is also great but again it's hard to find. It has an alternate version of Amuseum. It sounds more tame but just as good.
Faster tracks from Mannheim Steamroller such as Good King Wenceslas and Carols of the Bell are also great for demoing.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood is also good for demoing but it must be physically scratch free. For some reason, any scratches on the disc will cause snaps and crackles to be audible.
It's too bad we can't share music anymore.

    Hi Skilbovia!

That CD is not, to my knowledge, from the original master tapes. These were/are still under dispute as to actual legal ownership, so nothing has been done with this, Criminal Record or No Earthly Connection since the original LP, cassette, or 8 Track releases.
The source for this CD is most likely vinyl, although heavily processed and "cleaned up". I've not heard it, so I can't be dead sure... $200 would be a heck of an experiment.
There are copies available on eBay that are Russian bootlegs from vinyl, pops and clicks no extra charge.:D
6 Wives does indeed sound better on vinyl, but, remember, it was his first solo album, and was not as pristine a production as, say, Alan Parsons might have done.
While discussing the older recordings, we can't forget the MFSL releases, especially Dark Side of the Moon.
Some early Alan Parsons, like "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" or "Stereotomy" are great demos, too.
Another fairly obscure artist is Arjen Lucassen, under the name "Ayreon". A fusion of heavy metal, jazz and symphonic-rock that has extremely wide frequency range and dynamics. Best in his series would be "The Final Experiment (1995)".

....and DQ10s were never known for producing high amplitude deep bass. They did (if I recall) a DQ1W passive 12" sub to help pick up the slack.

I know, that's why I ran them with the Cambridge Soundworks PSW1 Master/Slave Powred Subwoofer (with and Adcom 5500 AMP providing the watts). The subwoofers survivied, the old cones in the DQ-10's did not survive the higher harmonics of the canons. I was fined very heavily by the condo association because of this system and Dream Theatre's Images and Words one particularly loud Saturday afternoon. But now I have a house.

They have all been laid to rest giving way to a pair of Mirage OM-6's and of course the JBL system in my 2010 Prius, just to stay on topic.:p

I don't remember ever listening to the CA PSW1. It did have a great pedigree though.
I used to love Adcom equipment back in the day. The 555 was my favorite.....
I also have fomd memories of the Mirage speakers of the '80s and '90s. Good luck with them.
Oh, and back to topic: can't go wrong with Proprius' iconic "Jazz at the Pawnshop" series. They did 4 editions as I recall. Soundstage, defiinition and depth of image were the strong points of these recordings. When listening to these recording in the Prius I move the fader a bit more to the front.
You can count the wires on the brushes and hear the movement of fingers on the strings/frets of the standup bass.
