Someone broke the driver side window (glass), maybe hoping it’s not a Toyota Prius or for some idiotic reason. Anyways, I’m trying to get it replaced and looking for advice.

    1. is it a DIY-able repair? Any guides since I haven’t seen much on YouTube.
    2. Can Safelite do the replacement with the original Toyota glass? I currently have an appointment in two week. The folks on the phone said it’s possible, I’m skeptical.
    3. Is the body shop/collision at the dealership a good place for it? I might end up paying out of pocket since I live in a snowy area and can’t afford to wait.

any other advice on this, thanks.

Usually door glass replacement isn't very hard to DIY. You get the hang of it the first time, how the inside door panel comes off and so forth. Vacuuming the glass crumbs out of the bottom of the door can be the slowest part. If you live in a place where this kind of thing happens more than once, you can get pretty fast.

I'm not sure if there's anything very special about Toyota side glass compared to what your friendly local glass shop has. You might at least compare the price and see how special that is. I think I would be more likely to pop for Toyota glass for a windshield, say, especially if the car has a heads-up display or driving assist cameras.

It's nothing special and easy to do if your handy.
A bear smashed out the drivers side door glass on my old SR5 pickup while I was camping. It was only the second time I've ever changed a door glass. Yes, vacuuming out the glass takes a long time, If you don't want it to rattle while using the door or bouncing down the road.
If you can't get the glass in, peel back the front and rear glass u-guides. You can slip them back in, once the glass is in place.

    Good luck.....

Some trims of the 2025 Camry have an acoustic noise reducing front side glass. Something similar may also apply to some Prius trims.

My Gen 3 got broken into twice. I went to Toyota to price out a new passenger side window. Apparently it was a separate part number, being a Prius plug-in, and had a higher price than the regular Prius. They quoted me $1000 CAD, plus an 8 week wait, minus installation.

I called a wrecker and he quoted me $80. When I got there to pick it up, he said he'd made a mistake, it was $60. I put it in myself in 10 minutes after watching a YouTube video on my phone.

The second time it happened, I went straight to the wrecker.

I believe the higher Prius trims do.

Respects, but you already pay for insurance that handles this for you.

I’ve got an XLE Prius. Any idea who to find it out?

For the Camry, it is listed in the sales brochure. Otherwise do a parts lookup online. For some reason, the 2025 Camry parts are still not listed online even though it was released in May 2024.

Do you carry "Comprehensive" coverage on your car insurance? If yes that would cover the repair minus your Comprehensive deductible if any.

My knowledge came from discussions here. It might only be true for the Prime. From comments, the laminate glass has a different tint than the standard glass on the rear windows. There might be a label etched on the lower corner of the glass.

The big clue is in how it broke, and the fact it did break. The fancy glass is the one that is the one that makes it hard for rescuers to get into, and it doesn't shatter into pieces.

I've been carrying a rescue knife, with a seatbelt cutter and a glass breaker, should I find myself trapped in a wrecked vehicle.

Not all glass breakers are created equal. If the point isn't harder than the glass, it won't shatter the window; it will just make a divot on the glass.

Window tint film will also hold the glass together. A desirable feature from a security standpoint, but not so much in an escape scenario.

Window tint is illegal in most places.

I think Canada-wide, but at least in BC, aftermarket tint is not allowed forward of the rear side doors. US seems a lot less stringent though, even allows windshield tint in some States I think. Which seems nuts to me, especially for night driving.
    Exactly. Near-new car too.

My state allows a lighter tint on the front side windows & the top 6 inches of the windshield. The windshield visor tint is especially good for us height challenged people. ;)

Around here in LA County, everyone has dark tint. You can’t see the inside of the cars at all at night.

Most people around here just find a doctor who will take cash to write you a note claiming you have a skin condition that allows you an exemption from the tinting law.
