Hit my Prius!!! I just got it on Friday 9/29 in time for the tax break. I was inside my apt all day mind you when I went out to check the mail. Sure enough someone had knocked off my driver's side mirror, took off some paint from the door and put many a dent in it. I used just about every curse word I know once I saw it. I asked a few neighbors who of course saw nothing. What I'm really wondering is why didn't the alarm go off? I was under the impression that it would go off if someone hit the car while no one was in it. Is there an alarm that I could purchase that would go off whenever someone hit, pushed or shoved the car? What good is the alarm if it doesn't go off when someone gets their grubby little hands on it?

Still pissed and I'll be stalking the parking lot later this evening looking for any and all culprits.

Dude, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that your new baby was violated.
It's possible that it was an accident or it's possible that some people just simply don't like it when other people have nice things. Most likely the latter.

Oh yeah, I just remembered, the mirrors pivot forward as well as backward, so if someone hit it driving past, it most likely would have pivoted. So it seems that someone most likely did it on purpose.

I'm really annoyed that there are people that petty here. I'm moving back to the sticks and quick.

    Tlyke,

I'm so sorry your new car has been damaged, and so soon after taking delivery! The fact that you car has been damaged is a letdown, but the bigger disappointment is how people just don't seem to care about anyone else but themselves.

If your car was hit by accident, for example, you'd thing someone would put a note with their name and phone number under the windshield wiper. It's the right thing to do. But no, they probably didn't have insurance and so they chose to selfishly saddle you with the cost. Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens all the time.

If your car was vandalized, then the likely reasons are manifold but they all boil down to selfishness in one form or another...

    Sorry.

I just read your description again. When you say that they "took off some paint from the door and put many a dent in it" do you mean the door itself? And if so, do you think that they actually tore the mirror down and off? That's pretty much the only way you can do it since it pivots. I'm just thinking that when they tore it off with a downward force, it banged against the door leaving the dents.

I hope you have vandalism insurance and a small deductible.

    aww :(

sounds like that wasn't an accident... at any rate your insurance should cover it. a good body shop and you'll be good as new again! just think, your first door ding is going to seem like nothing now. good luck!

Yes, the "many a dent" description had me wondering, too. Could vandals -- if that's what this was -- have kicked the door repeatedly? Do any of the dents have sharp creases or are they all relatively smooth-edged?

The cop said that it looked like someone had done it by hand and it was deliberate. He said the dents don't sppear to be from a door (they're too big) or from a car sliding past. The dents are low on the door maybe about the middle half. Too far away from teh mirror since the mirror is still hanging on by all those cords in there. MFer's. I'm tempted to be as petty as they were and go around breaking everyone one elses side mirror. Absolutely ridiculous. I worked very hard for that car and some knuckle head is really pushing my buttons. On the plus side the ins. co says I won't have to pay the full deductible for some reason or other and the cops will be sending someone out to talk to the other residents and look at surrounding cars. I've just finished taping my mirror back on so it's not banging about until Wed. when I can get it fixed. Now I'm headed out to a local watering hole where it's $10 for all you can drink night. I need it.

    Thank You and Good Night

Sorry to hear about your plight, but "all you can drink for $10"? My kind of joint! Might be worth a drive to MD, except I probably wouldn't be able to drive back...

Sorry to hear about this. A couple of weeks after I took delivery of my car my driver side view mirror was shattered. There was no damage to the side of my car though. I came to the conclusion it was probably an accident although I couldn't quite understand how somebody sideswiping it by accident could have completely shattered the mirror (no damage to the mirror housing).

Sorry about your new Prius. Hope it gets fixed as good as new and they find the moron(s) responsible.

I truly am sorry to hear about the damage, but happy you have a good local watering hole!

OK... so this is about the fifth time I've heard somebody ask about the "alarm" in these cars. And this is the fifth time that I've responded with, "these cars don't have an alarm - unless somebody can tell me otherwise." Nobody has told me otherwise. These cars don't have factory alarms.

And yes, you can certainly buy any number of aftermarket alarms that have adjustable "shock" sensors that will go of when somebody bangs your car.

Darell, get your car in Ready or Ig-On, roll down the windows, shut the car off, get out, lock the doors, move your fob 20' from the car, reach through an open window and open a door. Thanks.

Tlyke1983, I'm really sorry some cretin messed with your car so viciously. I hope the perp is caught and punished.

um. try dealing with the passive alarm. go to the dealer and ask them to activate the "passive" alarm function. then try going somewhere with a passenger. say a quick trip to the grocery store, where you run in and the passenger waits.

tell me how quickly you see there is an alarm... and how quickly you go back to have it shut off!

I thought hitting the mirror will set off the alarm? Unless ripping it off is different from hitting it cause I know that from washing the Camry and my friend's 4Runner. On both occasions, I hit the mirror and the alarm went off.

Ugh, just wanted to offer my condolences.

Try to breathe, not rush to judgement (a difficult suggestion), and move on. She'll be looking new again before you know it.

There a lot of jerks out there; I hate to admit it but I've probably been counted among that number more times than I'd care to think about.

I'm not saying what was done is okay; just try to rise above it when you can. You can't know who did it, or what was going through their (head-of-a-pin-sized) brain at the time...breeding hatred only perpetuates the situation.

They probably drive a Hummer or something where gas usage is measured in GPM.

Check your insurance policy - at one time, mine (USAA) fully covered the repairs (no deductible) when it clearly wasn't my fault - my car was parked in a lot. You may be surprised.

Thanks everyone for your concern and kind words. I have Geico and even though I have Collision because they don't know who hit the car I have to pay the deductible and not the assailant. I brought it to the Auto Repair place today and a good thing too because he was able to order a new mirror today, I turn the car in tomorrow and he says they should have it fixed by Friday. The only downside is Enterprise wants $100 upfront that I'll get back. Does this sound normal? The only other accident I've been in was in broad daylight and I was in the car when it happened so I didn't have to pay out anything.

YEA!!!! I finally got my honey back today. I would have gotten it back on the 13th but FedEx actually lost my mirror. Even with the tracking number the package disappeared. Either way I got my car back, she's riding just as smooth as ever and I missed her something awful. Enterprise gave me a Corolla but it just wasn't the same. I mean I had to actually take the keys out of my pocket and put them in the ignition. Crazy I tell ya!! :)
