It took almost 4 months, but today Toyota made it official in the PriusChat forums that the oil change interval on the 2010 Prius has been upped to 10,000 miles instead of the previous 5,000 mile OCI. The information that you may have read about on PriusChat back in September was all correct: the 2010 4 cylinder Camry, the 4.6L Tundra and Sequoia, the FJ Cruiser, 4Runner, and Scion XD are all also included in this oil change interval update. According to PriusChat forum member hkazemi (and verified by Toyota), many 2010 Toyota vehicles that use 0W-20 oil can be serviced at a 10k mile/1 year interval, if used in "regular use". "Severe use" still calls for 5k/6 month intervals. The notification, dated December 15, 2009, includes a 19 question FAQ. The included vehicles are: 2010 Toyota Camry (4 cylinder) 2010 Toyota Prius 2010 Toyota Tundra (small V8) 2010 Toyota Sequoia (small V8) 2010 Toyota FJ Crusier 2010 Toyota 4Runner (6 cylinder) 2010 Scion xD The notification defines "severe use" as: -mainly being used on dirt/dusty roads -consistently used to tow trailers or with car-top carriers or heavy load use -primarily used for short trips below 32 F / 0 C -extensive idling and low speed driving like police/taxi/door-to-door delivery Severe use only applies when the majority of your driving falls into the listed special operating conditions. Occaisonal driving under those conditions is not severe use. There will also be a coupon program available for customers who paid for an oil and filter change at 5000 miles. The coupon will give these customers a free oil change. Customers will be notified in early February 2010. You can view the Toyota documents in the following PriusChat thread: Some 2010 Toyota Vehicle Oil Change Intervals Officially Revised To 10000 miles/1 year

So what will be the interval for the Severe use? 5,000 miles?

Edit: Just read the scans. The answer is yes.

Boo, they are not going to reprogram the 5,000 miles reminder.

I just checked here. Yes this is semi-official now as far as Central Atlantic Toyota is concerned. By semi-official I mean that written notifications from the regional headquarters to the local dealers have not been sent .. yet .. but the official word has been passed down that it's in the works..soon.

Verbal confirmations were given last week.

Hm... well then I need a refund on a maintenance contract if this takes effect in CA.

I generally drive 7600 mi/yr based on the last 14 years.

Interesting. I guess they had to do it since there would be a 10k OCI on the 2011 vehicles.

But I would like to see TMC notify all the owners too.

According to the next to last paragraph on page 1, that will start happening in early Feb., 2010 with a revised maintenance and warranty manual.

GST region has been notified of this since December 9th. Apparently this interval will be the norm for all Toyotas as more and more engines transition to 0W20 oil.

The reminder stays the same because the tire rotation and brake inspections etc. are still mandatory every 5K miles and people would forget that if the light was set to 10K miles.

Substitute "mandatory" with "recommended" and you may be correct.

So, which parts of the listed scheduled maintenance are mandatory to keep the warranty in effect and which are only recommended?

I can't see how not rotating the tires would void anything but the tire warranty.

I'm not blaming owners on this, but I sure wish we could get a nationwide, Toyota wide, announcement on this. If they are changing and/or are going to change the oil change interval recommendation then I wish they would just do it.

Regional announcements become like a slow wave. I'd just like it confirmed and solid EVERYWHERE at some point.

To me bumping it up to 10,000 miles would be a fantastic benefit to Prius ownership, as I'm not much on changing my own oil so if it can become a 10,000 mile event SUPER!

But I just don't get why it seems like a slowly leaking out secret that get's revealed from region to region, dealership to dealership...just do it, or don't.

If you have a braking system problem at 10K miles, they could say the brake warranty is now void because you missed the 5K brake inspection.

Your warranty would not be void.

FWIW, I spoke with one of the service advisors at my local dealer earlier today. She stated that it was official. The oil change interval is now 10,000 miles and the appropriate onboard computer will be reprogrammed so that the oil change reminder will light up at 10,000 miles rather than the current 5,000 miles.

Take it for what it's worth. She sounded like she knew what she was talking about. Good news if it's true.

    Merry Christmas to all!

It takes all of about ten sec to reset the oil change reminder, what's the big deal?
