Purchased a shiny new habanero colored c as a gift to myself for... reasons, and to my dismay through normal operations in winter it looks like someone has taken a sandblaster to the corners of the front fenders. When I pointed it out at the first 5k check up the service manager said that they were rock chips and the dealership wouldn't do anything to help me out with it. He did mention putting on aftermarket mudflaps to prevent it in the future. I informed him that my commuter car (an 03 cavalier) has 175 k miles on it, and none of the paint on it is missing, or chipped. So why should my brand new vehicle be having problems with it? I also inquired as to why there aren't factory mudflaps on the front wheels in order to protect the paint in those areas he then agreed to help cover some of the cost to fix the paint, and install the mudflaps...

My question is two part, Is anyone else having problems with this and if so has the dealership helped them out yet?

While my car was being serviced I went and inspected all the floor model cars, and most of them would be susceptible to the same type of paint damage my prius has due exposed paint on the fenders directly behind the tires.
Can you even find mud flaps for this cars? I haven't been successful in locating any online...

The paint overall is not durable, I have big chips on the hood too after only 7K miles.

That sounds so crazy because after 175,000+ miles on my 05, the paint still looks awesome. I have never had a problem with paint on a Toyota and I've owned 4. Can you post some pics? Are there a bunch of rocks in your area?

The tire tread on some tires may tend to pick up more rocks than others. (Just a thought.)

This is an OUTSIDE possibility, but: look the car over real careful, for signs of bodywork. We once had a "new" car with paint coming off. Turned out one compete side had been side swiped and repaired. In this province at least, maybe country wide, a new car can have up to 20% of retail value in repairs, undeclared.

At least, that's in the standard new car purchase contract. That's by no means chiselled in stone tho, like any contact you can edit that amount, and have the dealership sign off on the edit. In practice they can be very reluctant to do so though.

Probably NOT your issue, just a thought.

It's a cold weather thing, they sand the roads, and when the tires heat up it picks up the sand. The issue is that everyone else that sells cars here realizes that and either has mud flaps standard, or has a harder clear coat there. I can take pictures tomorrow. I don't think it's had body work, I mean It is an outside possibility, but it had 14 miles on it when I bought it. I'm just kind of disappointed that my shiny new car through normal road use here is, you know, no longer shiny and new, and now in need of body work or it will rust.... And my old POS that I drive on the gravel 50 miles every day to go to work has absolutely perfect paint in that area.
